The kinda-official LG G4 bootloop thread

Up and running here as well. They said they did a main board swap but the phone I got back didn't have my tempered glass protector on it. Unfortunately since mine was in immaculate condition because of the otterbox I can't tell if its just an A quality refurb or my original phone. ^^

btw I love how google attempts to restore the phone from online backups...over cellular... shouldn't you stick in a wifi config screen first? :/

My G4 went into the loop yesterday. Called T-mobile and since the phone is a month past its warranty they passed me off. Wrote up the repair request about 2-3 hours ago and have yet to receive an email confirmation or a shipping label. Does this mean I applied wrong? I saw that others were getting everything done for free, so I don't wanna be stupid and pay for shipping and the fix.

Any help/info is appreciated.

In my case, LG won't be responsible for the bootloop issue. I'm from Argentina and I bought it from eBay (Argentina) without carrier and made in Korea. So everyone are "washing their hands", as we say here in Argentina. LG USA says LG Argentina would fix it, LG Argentina says I didn't buy it in Argentina. LG Korea never responded.

The shipping label was a link at the end of the process that created the RMA. You get nothing via EMAIL.

My second sprint lg g4 went into bootloop last week and this one was sent to me July 2015, way past warranty, I explained the bootloop issue at the sprint store and they researched it in there computer and took it back saying lg is well aware of these issues so the warranty and the fact that I didn't have insurance on the phone did not matter, went to sprint to pic up my replacement lg g4 today and an LG g5 was handed to me. So not only are they swapping them but there swapping them with g5s

Google bootloop issue and scroll through, you will come across a class action article that will explain everything. The class action didn't happen because Lg wanted no part of that and started replacing all lg g4s with bootloop issues

This is reassuring, although I wish they'd offer you the opportunity to get any replacement phone you wanted. I personally wouldn't take a G5 if they handed it to me. That's how much respect and faith I've lost in LG Mobile.

Another G4 in bootloop. Bought first LG just over a year a year ago as Samsung''s offering at the time had no ext. memory or replaceable battery. The store recommended the G4 and it seemed nice for about 14 months. Then about a month ago some weird things; some pictures would shoot fine but then get blocked out with grey squares and be labelled corupt. I read that this might be a sign of a failing ext mem card, but card was fine on everything else. So tried storing pictures to internal memory and same greying put... Then a couple funny reboots, then the failure to reboot at all. Read up and took it to dealer and they got RMA from LG and sent it in. But then the reply from repair center is they found a little evedence of liquid marks inside the screen and thus want 400$ to fix it. I had sent a note that the residue on the glass was from some alcohol I cleaned the USB jack with had wicked under the glass ... but that and the fact that the liquid detector by the sim slot is white didn't seem to matter, they want to sidestep fixing it. They also want 25 bucks just to return the phone, which is something I never heard of or agreed to. So just starting a fight with them and others. Sasktel is my carrier. I'm thinking LG stands for Low-end Garbage after my first experience with them... should put that on a red stop sign as a graffic and let friends know about them and their practices .

Some say you can buy an eMMC chip off Ali express and replace the MultiMedia Controller, but that soldering looks tricky. And do I really want to bother...

My phone is/was a 815 in the 505 range. My loaner is a Samsung, as will likely be my next phone. Also cell phones from Costco's cell kios may be coming with an extra year of warrantee soon,,, nice, not the manufacturer won't look for ways to get out of warranty..

First LG G4 (Sprint) bootlooped last December, 2nd (replacement) G4 bootlooped last week. This last one was out of warranty and Sprint wouldn't do anything about it except try and sell me a new phone. Both phones had SN's starting with 505.

Really like the V20, in large part because of removable battery. Anyone hear of that phone having same issues?

Dude, with their track record and yours with the G4, I'd steer clear of LG. I had one bootloop, and got it replaced by AT&T. I won't pick LG when I'm due for an upgrade next month.

Happy G4 to V20 user here, and most everyone in the V20 forum here has been more than pleased with it. So far there haven't been any wide spread issues reported, only the usual random problems that might pop up on any mass produced phone.

LG G4 data recovery can be done very reliably using a chip-off method. When FlashFixers receives an LG G4 for data recovery, we first disassemble the phone to access and remove the main logic board and then isolate the eMMC chip. It is usually a Toshiba brand measuring 11.5 X 13 mm and located in the top left corner on the top side of the board, visible after you remove the shield. We then use a preheater underneath the board for several minutes to bring the temperature up before applying hot air to the top side and gently removing the memory chip. The black ooze that seeps out when the chip is heated and sticks to the chip after removal is an ugly underfill that must be removed before putting the chip in a test socket. We clean the chip under a microscope using a soldering iron, flux and 99% isopropyl alcohol, then touch up the connections with leaded solder before placing it in our fixture. We use a Sireda eMMC test socket P/N 304-0000113, but there are other fixture options available from AliExpress or Amazon. Once in the fixture and connected to a PC, we use R-Studio or Winhex to access the userdata partition and navigate to the photos and videos under the Media folder. We've done hundred of these type of recoveries and our success rate is over 98%.

Another unhappy G4 user. Phone was great until it just went black on me 2 weeks ago. Went through Verizon and they verified it was a boot loop issue and then went through LG chat and they verified it was boot loop and they said my phone was out of warranty so it would cost me to fix it. Seeing some of the success in this thread about phones being fixed out of warranty I took a chance and shipped it in and they are saying it'll be $72 to fix it or $150 to replace it with a refurb. Bought this phone in August of 2015 so I am 17 months in on it and their "extended" warranty expires 15 months from the date of purchase or 18 months from date of manufacture. I'm pretty sure they looked at their failure rate and realized that most fail at 16+ months so they extended the warranty to 15 months just so they could say they did something. After admitting that there is a manufacturing defect causing these failures and then turning around and trying to charge me for the repair I can honestly say this is the last LG product I will be buying. LG does not stand behind their product and doesn't care about their customers!

My G4 boot looped on me as well. Sent it in to LG and they sent a refurbished G4. Unfortunately they didn't use my correct address and it was sent back to LG (Ft. Worth Texas). Had to call in and clearly give them my address again so they don't screw it up. Damn foreign call centers.

How old was your phone? Did they consider it to be out of warranty or still in?

My phone was about 15 months old. It was an unlocked international version. As far as I know there is no charge for the refurbished carrier branded G4 they are sending me.

Had the bootloop problem on my Verizon LG G4 that I purchased in June 2015. It would only power up to the powered by Android screen. I could also power up and go to the factory reset screen using the volume buttons but it would not actually start the reset process. I emailed LG and they told me that the repair would be billable but did not tell me how much it would be. I took the phone apart as shown in this video LG G4 Bootloop Fix | How I Unbricked it. - All but instead of a hair dryer (not hot enough to make a permanent fix) put the whole main board through one cycle in a benchtop reflow oven. This allowed the solder on the ball grid array (BGA) chip to re-flow and connect properly to the motherboard. My phone has now been working perfectly again for a week. Obviously at the time of manufacture LG failed to solder the BGA component on correctly. This is a quality control issue and is crap that LG won't fix this at no charge. I am so happy to have my LG G4 back again, especially after a week of going back to my old Galaxy S3. The phone is very easy to take apart, so if you have know someone that has access to a reflow oven it is a relatively quick and easy fix.
