Yep. That said, the sound is significantly better in X, especially in landscape mode.
To me though I use the screen almost all the time than listening to music from the speakers (got my Bluetooth headset for better sound) and it makes sense to build a product around that scenario. Essential, Apple, LG, Huawei - all do it. There is just no sense in having a notch but not giving the entire screen real estate to users.
If Google wants to put front facing speakers a priority, they can certainly do so without the notch and opting for tiny bezels like Samsung and see Huawei phones.
Yep, EXCEPT as I stated above, when using the phone in landscape, the palm of my hand rests against the top and bottom of the phone. It doesn't matter how good a speaker is, if it's being covered it won't sound good. So when I forget to cup my hands around the bottom firing speaker, I have to restart the video and position my hands accordingly. And as I stated above, watching videos longer than a few minutes your hands start to hurt.
Of course if you're using the phone to listen to music that isn't an issue, because you can point the speaker directly at you, but when using it to watch videos, which is what I stated in my last post, you wouldn't be able to see the screen. Sure, I could use wireless external speakers or headphones, but then I wouldn't need any speakers at all.
Maybe that's the solution! Remove all ports! No speakers (use external headphones or speakers), no charging/data port (wireless charging and Bluetooth data transfer or cloud). And that means we could have a completely water/dust proof device!
But back to my point. I've already had several phones with down firing speakers, and I hated each of them for watching any video content. Some sounded great, so long as the speakers aren't covered. So I don't need to theorize about how they work, I know and I don't like them. As for removing the notch and having smaller bezels, it will be almost exactly the same space. The notch on the 3XL, if extended to each edge, would take up the same space as what's currently on the 2XL. The only difference is the notification bar being cut in two. Now if you let a bunch of notifications stack up, instead of showing the first 4 and then the dot to show more are also there, you'll see every one of them. To me it looks more cluttered that way. After seeing how the LG G7 ThinQ, I think they've hit on the best solution. Instead of extending the wallpaper into the areas on either side of the notch, they made it black, so it looks like a regular bezel. But, the notifications seem to appear on the bezel, instead of below the bezel on past phones.
Regardless, as I've said before, I'm planning on going with the smaller Pixel 3 (assuming the tariffs don't increase the price by 25%) because I prefer the smaller model for better single handed use. But if that model came with a notch, it wouldn't bother me. And I'd take 2 front facing speakers over a single down firing one any day and twice on Sunday. I get you don't agree with that, but that's my feelings on it.
