The Note 8 can provide a hotspot while still connected to local wifi

I use mobile hotspot a lot. In prior phones when mobile hotspot was turned on the phone immediately turned off wifi and, thus, disconnected the phone from the local wifi. The Note 8 does not do this. I have mobile hotspot on, which creates its own wifi network, and I'm successfully connected to the local wifi network at the same time. Clearly the wifi radio is doing two things at once.

Pretty cool!

Are you seeing traffic on the connected WiFi (not hotspot) also? Maybe set something like Google Music to download on WiFi only and see if you can download a song.

Cool, good to know. It's worth noting, though, that the S8 could do this too.

...or, is this a broadcast of actual LTE rather than Wi-Fi sharing?

My S8+ would not only disconnect wifi when the hotspot was running it would turn off wifi altogether reducing location finding to less than optimal. Same happened with the S7 Edge. The Notes never turned off wifi, that's why I was looking forward to getting off of the "S" series and back to a Note.

I guess I'm missing something here. Why do you run the Hotspot when you have local Wi-Fi? What would you connect to the Hotspot rather than the Wi-Fi?

My Note 8 pops up a message saying to enable Mobile Hotspot, it needs to turn off wifi. How come? I am on Xfinity Mobile service if it makes a difference. To add another element, my LG X Charge (also on Xfinity Mobile) lets me share a wifi connection. It even has that option to enable/disable under Mobile Hotspot.

This is old but I just noticed this too.

I am staying in a hotel (captive hotspot) because I lost my home to a fire. But I saved a Google home mini. My mini cant sign on to the hotel hotspot but I got it to connect to my phone hotspot and my Note8 on at&t to connect to hotel wifi.

Making it act almost like an extender.

I did this at a hotel too. bought their 24 hour WiFi package but my Xbox doesn't give the sign in options. was able to connect my phone to the hotel WiFi then share it with the Xbox.

on a side note this also allows you to sidestep the device limit on WiFi connections like this.

Should have said I'm in UK on Vodafone and bought my note 8 from Samsung direct

On Verizon and just instructed to turn off WiFi when I turned my hotspot on.
What you need to do is not immediately activate Hotshot but rather click in the blank spot next to the switch key here:

And then click on WiFi Sharing when you are in the next Menu

I never noticed this. Thanks for pointing it out. I see a use case when you are dealing with Log-in type WiFi (Hotels and such), and you want to provide access to a device that has trouble with that type of network. Someone mentioned a Google Mini. That is exactly one example.
