The Official Battery Life Thread

yet another day of mediocre battery life compared to how much i actually used it, but i think the real problem is that the stock battery monitor is not reading correctly.

13.5 hrs, 20% left

social location 68% (how?? i only opened it once a little while ago to see what it was about, and then i turned it off via the "menu / off" )
cell standby 13% (time without signal, 0s)
phone idle 12%
voice calls 4% (21m)
display 2% ( 1hr 30 min)
android os 2%

once again missing from this were several apps i used (a downloaded game for about 10 mins, poweramp music player for another 10 mins, etc.).

should i look into another battery monitor?

also, the majority of today was spent on 3g. let's see if i can hold that 20% overnight (no battery saver enabled)

13.5 hours and not dead for an LTE handset is not mediocre. It's fan-frigging-tastic.

it's fantastic if the 4G were on all the time. i only had 4g on for maybe 25 mins max all day.

edit - no, my phone did not make it through the night. i also subsequently missed my backup alarm to wake up this morning, haha. oops.

After hitting about 9-10 hours a day with light usage and LTE, GPS, etc. ON and Wifi OFF, I've decided to give it a day and try Wifi on and LTE off at work (since I don't really need LTE at work).

I can already see the battery savings from running it this way, and (thanks to some of the posts) I've picked up the LTE switch app as well from Android Market (it's simply a shortcut to your network selection, not a widget, but for now does the trick).

I still have the extended battery on order and for days when I'm out and about I will prefer to flip on the LTE and turn the wifi off, but today will give me a good test to compare the diferences.

my turn to chime in... after a full charge before bed, taking it off charger at 100%...so its idle all night.
730am starts my checking my usual messages and streaming music at them gym on 4G.

standby = 46%
idle = 42%
Android OS = 6% and
display = 5%

its now down to 20%. not so impressed honestly. my X (altho rooted, i get that) would be well above 20%...

I swapped in a full battery before I went to bed. By the time I went to bed (10:30PM) it was down to 80%. When I woke up (6:00AM) the phone would not turn on because the battery had drained to 0%.

Never even tried the standard battery; I've been on extended since day 1. I've been on vaca, so my use has been heavier than normal, but still need to charge once in the middle of the day, plus every night. I have the car dock, so everytime I drive its on power, but, unlike my OG Droid, the Bionic doesn't seem capable of running navigation plus gaining some charge, so that hurts.

I get fringe reception at home, and, from what I've heard, that will cause extra battery drain. So that might be part of my trouble. Still, its right about where I expected it to be.

You can definitely run navigation in the vehicle and get a charge, BUT you have to have the right car charger. You need the Moto one that they call a rapid charger. It has a clear glass end (cigarette plug end) with a big M that glows blue when plugged in. You can get them on amazon for 12 to 15 bucks. I just got back from a Memphis to Atlanta drive using navigation the whole time. Plugged on on the way home at about 50% and a couple hours later is was at 100% and stayed there the rest of the drive.

I think mine charged yesterday using the VZW car charger. I'm curious to check this out now as I'd invest in one of the Moto ones if my VZW one isn't cutting it.

EDIT: for anyone curious about the one he is referring to:

my phone ran for about 14hrs...........moderate texting throughout the day....about 50 minutes of pandora streaming....running 4G all day..........and 2 hours of being in sleep mode.

today i am going to do the same but in 3G and see the difference

From 10% life to 100% life charging on my Standard docks takes around 2 hours consistently. That isn't too bad I don't think.

Now this is just plain silly. Took the phone off the charger ~1130 am this morning. No phone calls, phone on 3G except for 2 brief periods when I went out (total ~20 mins on 4G). About 20% left after 9hrs 20 mins, but the graph is pretty hilarious. I'm pretty sure at one point the Bionic drained battery so quickly that it almost warped time back in on itself (i'm assuming this is when I played a game for about 10 mins...not sure though). I had to install the ShootMe app just so I could share this graph.

What I wish I could figure out is how the hell I can get my phone to stay in the middle portion of the graph - i.e. when the battery usage is more or less flat. It's clearly capable of doing it, but I don't know why it sometimes drains battery more quickly than others. Oh well...9 more days to make my decision

display on for 1hr 51 mins in case you were wondering, and game was on for 8m 27s. Screen on dimmest setting (except when I go out, when I change it to autobrightness).

Hahaha, note to self: never download Contract Killer ;)

Back on topic though, seems like the phone wasn't awake through most of the plateau in the middle of the discharge, do you have data shutting down after a certain timeout? Could be that the radios are powering down at some point.

nope, i have it on performance mode, push gmail and push corporate exchange mail. Maybe I just left it on the desk for more extended periods of time?

Is the game "Words with Friends" known to be a major batter drainer? I've been getting pretty good battery life, but today I installed that game and played it actively while I was working and the phone only lasted 7 hours (I normally get almost double that).

Looks like your graph grew a little horn in the middle. Strange...I can't understand why your phone battery usage spiked in there. I really think Motorola's software is to blame for some of this...they need a hotfix soon for quite a few bugs. None are really huge though, which is good. Just keep a charger around and check your application usage.

This is what I'm thinking/hoping as well. I'm monitoring all of my usage and there is no one particular app or process that is draining the battery...at least not according to system panel, powertutor and the stock battery stats app. I really don't get what the issue is, but no matter whether the phone is completely idle or not, whether 4G is enabled or not, the phone will drain below 40% within 5-7 hours. Within 30 minutes it's under 80%.
