The Official Blackberry Convert Thread

My first smartphone was the BB 8330 I got two years ago. I loved the keyboard and the push e-mail, but once I tried to surf the web and download lots of cool apps, I ran into a wall. It is simply inexcusable that it has such low application memory, not to mention terrible memory leaks that require battery pulls. And the non-Webkit browser is crap; all I use it for at this point reading the full versions of News/RSS feeds. I loved the promise of the blackberry, but RIM broke my heart. While BBM is cool, and I'm glad RIM has finally committed to a Webkit-powered browser, BBOS 6 is simply too little, too late. I can't wait to get my Droid X (once it's back in stock)!

I totally agree with you on this one. You'd think RIM would at least release the OS 6 when DX was released? Nope. It just sucks because the BB was really a great phone but with all these advances, you'd think they'd catch up? It is almost bittersweet to leave my Storm 2 because I did enjoy using it, but I am glad to have switched to a more reliable OS...

BTW, I am also waiting for my DX to arrive :-(

I haven't seen this question yet. I am now using a Storm 1 and the way I use email is I have an account for my business mail and a seperate account for my personal mail. When I travel and my computers are off the mail comes to my phone. I can either delete the messages on the phone and leave them on the server or delete from both. It allows me to read what I need to read and defer others until I get the laptop fired up.

Can I do this same thing on the DX?

I am a Bold 9650 user, but I have had the Droid X since release day and I am impressed. Not a fan of touch screens but this is pretty cool. But I am not sure if I am gonna covert totally as of yet as there are some picture issues, the Facebook issue (the facebook for droid sucks bad and needs a serious update), the whole "gotta" have a GMail account thing. I love the Hot Spot stuff and the features, but not convinced. Maybe 2.2 might fix the camera issues or not sure but...

I would ask a question or make a statement. It seems that the Blackberry takes better pictures than the Droid X. Despite being a 8.0mg camera, it seems that the 2.5 of the Blackberry takes better pictures.

Any suggestions, comments or anything? I love the Droid and all the stuff attached to it, but I take a lot of pictures and the Droids not manning up.

Select the image stabilization setting to get better pictures. Compared to my Storm they both take poor pictures in low light (although the noise is at a much higher resolution on the X) but with image stabilization on there's no comparison in broad daylight.

@bobmartin: what sort of mail server? maildroid (a free market mail client) will work with any standard email account; with pop3 deleting it on the phone also deletes it on the account, but with IMAP based accounts you can do that.

Good bye Storm 2..you'll be missed. I'll miss those late nights spent downloading Hybrid OS's because I just couldn't wait. *sigh* I WON'T miss BBM though!!! Good riddance!

Not a newbie to Droids but think my Droid X will keep me in this family for a long time.

Any of you S1 converts ever have your phone freeze up on you for days at a time?
I love the phone but I think it's time to jump over to the DX and see what all the fuss is about!
Do you guys think VZW will let me use my new every 2 a few days early?
I can't wait!!!!

NE2 is only a $30 discount these days...
I hear you on that one, but with so many people that i need to keep in contact with i kinda need a phone asap. and I've been waiting on the DX to be released, this just seems like the perfect opp.

Both are POP3 servers so this is not sounding so good for my emial procedure at the moment. Any other methods of handing this?

Well, the dev for maildroid is very active, so you could ask him. I think there's a whole thread on it in the application section (the main one, not on the X forums). Or you could have gmail pop3 your email and then you'd be able to configure it to leave a copy on the server.

Ordered mine on Friday to replace my S2 (it was always good to me). The only things I think I will miss are BerryWeather for the customizable radar screens and the BB calendar.

Has anyone found solid replacements for those?

Re-Ordered on July 17th (Long Story). My phone shipped on Thursday July 22,2010 and just got the email that it was delivered to my house. Woo Hoo!!!!!!

I am calling the store manager again tomorrow to see if they can do something. Anyone had any luck with getting to upgrade early? I only need 10 days now, July 26th is my upgrade date. Come on VZW give a good customer a break would ya?

I know I'm responding late and all but. this is my issue. I have a storm 1. Got it a year ago from a curve. Now I want the X. when I went into the verizon store on Monday, the guy told me that since I already had a smartphone, Verizon was allowing me to upgrade to a storm. I'm sure this is the case for everyone as well.

My contract is actually up in April of 2011. My mom has a multimedia phone, and her contract in up in November. So the rep in the store said Verizon are allowing people who want to get a smartphone an early upgrade.

Now if you can Customer service. They will tell you something different. Happened to me. So I hung up and called again and then I actually got someone who knew what I was talking about. He then suggested getting it/order via the store.

So my X cost me $199 and my mom's phone had the $100 rebate. Hope this gives a little incite on things.

Ordered ours last Wednesday. They came yesterday and got them all set up last night. I love mine, the wife loves hers too. I so dont miss my BB Storm one bit. (Sorry RIM) When she gets her work email with exchange going later today, the wife will be even more happy.

Yet one more BB convert ...

Count me in ... A Droid X convert from BB Storm 2, which followed a Tour 9630, Curve 9330, and Storm 1 (a disaster). Thought, as others, I'd never leave BB and had major guilt trip waiting for the DX delivery ... but most optimistic speculation on Storm 3 and OS6 never even came close to what is actually AVAILABLE on the Droid X. It was a 5-OMG experience at the first power-up. How can BB hype the OS6 since February and not make it available six months later?? No fair to its loyal customers.

The DX was bit confusing at first with all the icons on all those screens, but a bit of organization (including the oh-so-handy use of personally created folders) has streamlined everything! Also found most of the apps I really liked with the BB and now have on the DX. What a monster app store!! Beyond amazing!

Am wondering how the theme market is for Droid X. Maybe a bit early for that??

Formerly Atira on CB.com. Glad to be aboard!

I got my Tour last August, my NET was supposed to be April 2011 but I got the email from Verizon telling me I could upgrade to the Droid, Droid X, or Droid Incredible for $199. My X arrived yesterday... :). For this early upgrade you had to order in store or on the phone with customer service, you could not order online.

Can I do this same thing on the DX?

FYI, I had a similar question. Hunted all over to find an option to delete mail from server if I deleted it from the dx. Finally downloaded k-9 from the market and found the option there. If anyone knows where this might be in the standard email app let me know. Otherwise hope that it's there when we get froyo.

The email thing is just about the only thing i miss about my blackberry well that and BBM. The fact that i cant delete my emails on my phone is kind of annoying but not something i would drop the DX for another BB. The BBM is a loss but its not that big of a deal either I had quiet a few BBM contacts but none of them that I cant text just the same, it was just nice having the BBM.

I sent a link to Google Talk to my bbm friends, and they love the fact that they can use a program that is essentially bbm - with EVERYONE. Give it a try.

Google Talk is close, but not quite. The biggest thing for me is that you can't make actual groups where you can share files, pictures, etc. Group chat is there, but not the same level of functionality.

I'm happy with Google Talk but Google can do so much more with it and make it BBM-like because they have the technology and power to do so.
