The Official Blackberry Convert Thread

I was a big BB fanboy for years just left my Storm after two years and I'm loving my DX I took delivery a week go. Android newbie here but I admit im becoming a major fan.

I've been on my DX since early August and love it. I had to use my wife's Storm 1 (her NE2 is in Jan. 2011) this last weekend and absolutely hated it. I had forgotten how many issues I had to just deal with to use the phone. I couldn't be paid enough to switch back. RIM definitely lost a long term customer (5+ years) with their slow updates. UGH!

There are just so many things the DX will do that the BB won't and, IMO, there just isn't that much of an issue with mail, especially if you use either K-9 Mail or MailDroid (which I use). RIM has entered their death spiral and I really don't feel sorry for them.

Double Ugh!

I had a BlackBerry 8330 last year and was horribly disappointed with my choice. When I walked in the sales person told me it was the most reliable phone I could own. She jinxed me. I had to send back that phone and get a replacement 4 times due to software issues. And on top of that I was constantly wishing that it would do more.

That's until I got my Evo. Even after having it replaced due to a shattered digitized, I still love it! I don't wish my phone did something, I just do it. I most certainly don't miss BBM.

She did jinx you. I'm using my 8330 for only a little bit longer but in the almost 3 yrs I've had it I wouldn't trade it for any Verizon BB out there(except maybe the 9650). ;)

Well drioders, I'm on my way to making the switch. I may need a bit of help as I have been all blackberry for 4 years but I think I'm ready.

This week, I will be ordering my Droid X. Go easy on me.

:) Paul

Not sure if anyone needs this but I spent way too long trying to find it and get it onto my phone.
The Lightspeed sms notification from BB.

Edit: I have it in .mp3 format but it wont let me upload so the .rar will have to suffice.

I can't seem to get my ring tones into the Notification area, just the Phone Ringtone area. Searching through the phones files doesn't offer up any folders labeled Notification. All my old BB notifications area showing up in the Phones ringtones that transfered with the SD card.

How did you get light speed in there?

Well, you thing is, you have to create folders inside Media Like: Media>Audio>Notifications...etc. Do that for Ringtones and Alarms as well.

The easiest way to do that is by connecting the phone to computer via usb. Once you place the ringtone into the appropriate area, it should show up when the SD card remounts.

I tried dropping it in via dropbox but it wouldn't show up. I think you need to un mount and re mount in order for the files to show up...or wait longer than I was willing.

Just made the switch to the X two weeks ago, had the Storm 1 (9530) (actually leaked the first BB5 OS for it!), Storm 2 (9550), Curve II (8530), and until two weeks ago I was rocking the Bold (9650). I really love my Berries but was pretty disappointed in how the BB6 OS that was leaked ran on my Bold. I know it wasn't a carrier release and was therefore bound to have issues but I just felt like the new OS was designed with touch screens at the forefront and I cant deal with AT&T just to get a torch. So back on topic, here I am. Im trying to forgot all of my BB OS knowledge and figure out this rooting stuff and am probably gonna give it a whirl here in a minute so wish me luck. Glad to join the forums here and its been pleasant to see some familiar crackberry members that have joined the dark side too. Hit me up with any useful tips or info that you think will help me as I am truly a noob at all things droid but loving it all the same. Peace

I just made the switch as well. It started with the BB 8830 for 2 years then switch to the storm 1 then storm 2. Once I used the X, I was done with RIM!

Know what you mean. Been there and have now been on the DX for a couple of months now. I'm not going back to an S2 or S3 and it's not because of the hardware, it's because of the OS, just not as robust as Android.

One thing that may ease the pain is a Droid Pro, I've got my eye on it and it may be my next phone after the DX. Darn thing looks like it would be the perfect fix for a BB junkie turned Droidie. :p

I started BBs years ago and recently dropped my 8530 for a D2.
I have to say....for corporate/business use I think I may have to go back to the BB.
While I'm a technical person (I am the lone IT guy for my company) our operations and executives are not.

I can "deal" with some of the things I've found on the device, some I can't deal with...but I can tell you there's no way I can support less advanced (i.e. computer/device illiterate) folks like I can with the BB.

Too bad, I'm really liking the phone for my personal use!!

I am coming from a Bold 9650. I do miss a few features on it, especially the keyboard when I'm pounding out a long e-mail. I had a Droid Incredible a while back but am loving my DX. It is a HUGE phone and I"m not biggest guy either, but I like the screen size. Web browsing is super fast and I'm pretty happy.

I do not miss my Storm battery pulls but my Droid X benefited from resets too.

So far I find a lot about my X that's fun but the messaging and enterprise type software is a junk show by comparison.

My daughter wants me to keep the X.

yes...you were the man for quite a bit bc of that leak. i too went 9530>9550>X (3 weeks ago)...and man am i happy i did it.

i do get frustrated every once in a while bc i dont know android like i did BB for tweaks etc...but im sure i will be flying in no time.

i compare the feeling of coming to android from bb like i had when i switched from windows to mac.

one thing i miss more than i thought i would is the custom LED a la BerryBuzz (disco led especially). and of course my beloved bbm.

Viva Android

I was on Blackberry for years and loved the simplicity it offered for the longest time. Then other OS's started getting released, and simplicity was becoming boring. After awhile I felt like it was incomplete.....something was missing.

Android has filled that void, and Droid X has been the perfect device to carry it :)

I have been on my DX for about 2 months now and I don't miss my S1 AT ALL! My wife has a S1 and I hate using it, even when it is just to troubleshoot a problem she is having. By comparison, it is like having to use an original IBM PC (1MB ram running Win 3.11). OK, not that bad, but really like running Win2000 on a 512MB, Pentium 4 PC vs rocking my current Win7 Ultimate, 8GB, dual core laptop. Just no comparison!

Anyway, some quick tips for those of you who have converted and looking to get the most out of the platform while getting close to BB mail and calendar (EVERYTHING else about a DX is just too far ahead of RIM to compare).

1. Update the OS to Froyo (Android 2.2)! Press the upward pointing arrow at the bottom middle of the screen to pull up the applications list, scroll down to Settings, click it, scroll down to About Phone, click it, click System Update. Update baby!!! :D

Better speed, battery life, and the availability of MANY other features! You will have to reinstall many (most?) apps from the market, so plan on doing it over the weekend to allow enough time to get things back to normal.

(NOTE: If you get a message that the Update Server is down, try again, you MIGHT have to do a Factory Data Reset to get it to work. Try for a couple days before going through various backup procedures. I like using LookOut and Astro File Manager for this... I had to do a FDR to get the update to work. Oh, many VZW store reps will tell you, "You have to wait for it to roll out!" They are wrong. That is they way VZW USED to do it, but with the Droid X Froyo update it is directly available IMMEDIATELY via the System Update for the first time.)

2. NOW, download Google Voice from the Market. Go to YouTube and look up the Official Google Voice Actions videos from Google (you want the ~30 minute presentation). WOW!!!!! Oh, with the Voice Actions, try a Voice Text! COOL! All voice recognitions happens on Google server farms! Very good. As close to a "Star Trek" voice experience as is available today!

3. Plan on dumping the default Google email applications ASAP. Even on Froyo, they don't compare to BB. Depressing, but reality. Heck, from all accounts, they don't compare to the iPhone (iOS4 or later). Try MailDroid (what I use now) or K-9 Mail for the most BB-like email experience on the Android platform. The MailDroid Dev is extremely responsive, truly a breath of fresh air compared to RIM! K-9 Mail's devs are also supposed to be pretty good. Look for the respective support threads here for additional information.

4. If you miss your "Today" view on the BB, get the Simple Calendar Widget. It provides a view of the next 6 events in your calendar. IMO, the best, most battery friendly calendar widget (free!) available!

5. Download Calendar Snooze immediately, if not sooner. While it does have a couple quirks, it really makes the Android calendar alerts much more useful! Very customizable and the dev is pretty responsive via email!

6. DOWNLOAD Juice Defender and you will see your battery life soar! Definitely a top 5 app download for ANY Android device.

7. Try Dialer One. It is a call log add on (you can play with it when you press the phone icon to make a call and eventually make it the default view, if you like it). It allows call log sorting and grouping by user (i.e. you don't have to look at 10 different calls to the same user, just one listing) and can order them by most frequently called! HUGE help for me!

8. TapaTalk for accessing forums. A bit confusing on how to set up, but well worth it if you are a forum addict!

9. Oh, WOW! How could I forget?!? At least TRY an alternate keyboard from the default!!! There are many, but FIRST try the built in Swype! (Settings, Language and Keyboard, Default Keyboard (or some such, I don't have my phone in front of me right now), change the "trail" to longer). Give it a week. You will wonder how you lived without it. It makes having to type a joy. Really. Try the tutorial! AND you can still "thumb" it if you like/need to (new words/passwords/email addresses (email addresses can be learned in Swype))!

Swype is SO much better than ANY BB (touch screen or keyboard) after you get used to it, it is mind boggling (at least to me)! Also check out SwiftKeys (for those of you who are die-hard "thumbers") and SlideIt (a (better?) Swype, but a pay for app). Oh, Google is supposed to have bought BlindType (was in an unavailable beta on its web site with demo video). I think/hope it will be available in Gingerbread (Android 2.3 (3.0?)). Looks cool!

10. GAMES! To keep the kids quiet on trips, of course!

11. Froyo enables loading apps to your SD card. Don't know why you'd really need it with the built in 8GB of flash, but it's there. Personally, I'd just recommend getting the available 32GB Micro SD from VZW and use it for music/videos ($99, but you have to push them to look for the Droid X "special" rather than the regular $149, I got mine two weeks ago, WOW!), but that's just me.

12. Try a replacement (free or paid) camera app. They allow more freedom in taking pics. You are stuck (for now) with the default video.

13. Try a couple different Brightness apps for increased range in adjustability of screen brightness. Helpful to not get overwhelmed when viewing in the dark.

14. Try gReader as your RSS feed reader. Once set up, it is like the better BB RSS feed readers.

15. Really start rocking the 7 screens of "appable" space! Delete anything you don't use and organize them to your heart's content! I have (from "left to right") Games (2 pages, again for the kids :D, Everyday Apps (texting, etc.), Home screen (with Simple Calendar Widget)

16. Avoid widgets and live wallpapers unless you have regular access to keep your Droid plugged in. Widgets CAN, but do not always, drain battery. Especially weather widgets.

17. OH! There are apps available for even non-rooted phones to hook up a bluetooth keyboard for those of you who want to rock a full-sized keyboard in appropriate locations!

18. Consider rooting your phone. You can control what apps start (AutoStarts app) to control memory issues, "free" wi-fi hotspot if you want to void your Terms of Service, and many other benefits, check out the forums for more information!

19. Finally, get the extended battery. It offers 20-25% better battery life for only ~$40 (after "long-time" VZW 25% discount) delivered. Use the extended battery door. it CAN use the regular door, but you will notice screen ghosting because of the pressure after awhile. Even with the extended door, it will still fit many cases. I only hope that a 3000+ mah battery will become available soon like on the Droid Incredible. You know, because the kids keep draining the battery because of games/videos. Really! No, I'm serious! THEY do! ;)

Anyway, that ought to get those of you who have just stepped over up and running. Hey, with over 70,000 apps on the Market (compared to <10,000 in the BB App Store), this is just scratching the surface, so dive in. It is SO worth it! :D

Oh, and for you BBM fanatics, check out Crosstalk from Blue Planet Apps. It is supposed to offer BBM interoperability in an Android IM client among other IM systems.

I am on my 3rd X, and I wish VZW would send me a Bold 9650 as a replacement. I am tired of the problems with Motorola phones, and I miss my old BB, which worked like it should. May be slower than Android, but they get the job done with messaging and e-mails better than any other OS.
