It is true that samsung and every cell maker has to spend money to update software. But, samsung is releasing new phones with 2.2+ software. So its a lie to say that it costs too much money to update the galaxy S phones, and turn around a release a 2nd gen galaxy S phone with 2.3. They don't want to release the 2.2 update for the galaxy S phones as they want people to buy a new phone. Its simple, they make more money by getting people to buy new phones. Supporting older phones, doesn't make samsung any money.

It does make them money because it creates loyalty with customers and they are more likely to buy another Samsung device. I am a case of this, I have always bought Samsung phones, but stuff like this is making me want to give my money to the competition. I bought the Epic the day it came out and have been waiting patiently for a Bluetooth and GPS fix but my patience has just about run out after reading this article about Samsung's greed.

While its true that being a good company does generate loyalty. However, most people don't know what software their phone has, let alone know that their phone has an outdated OS.

Samsung does not care about techies, if I did not tell my brother that he cold update this OG moto droid to 2.2 he would still be running 2.1. Unfortunately we, people who visit and comment on this site are a tiny minority. So samsung can ignore us and still make money. I am sure samsung has number crunchers that looked at the numbers and saw that they would make more money if they ignored techies and not release certain updates.

Its sad but true. I would love to be wrong. The only silver lining that I can see is that we might get an update to 2.2 once samsung releases some new phones with 2.3.

While sprint may have their hand in the delay Ill say more blame on samsung as it seems they want to move new hardware over moving the epic. I have said from the start of this section the epic never got its day in the sun just like the pre. That is a sprint issue 100%, but I still feel samsung is doing to the epic what they did to the moment. Feels EXACTLY the same. I forsee the epic MAYBE getting 2.2 or 2.3 and then being cut off completely just as the moment was. As stated in this thread and others dual cores, tablets and next gen galaxy phones are taking precedence and their announcements and releases are shadowing an already shadowed phone. Between samsung pushing new hardware and sprint's love affair with the evo the epic was doomed before it even came out.

Honestly I think we all (those who fought for the epic) were foolish to think it would get great support. I thought alot and hoped alot that Id start seeing commercials for the epic as it takes the torch from the older evo. But that never happened. I still see commercials about the evo 7+ months after being released. I have seen 1 or 2 epic commercials, and to be quite honest havent seen one in many months. I do hope for those still hanging on that they release 2.3 for you before dumping the phone completely, but the negativeness that I feel toward the situation thinks it just wont happen. Honestly I think epic users will be lucky to get 2.2 before getting thrown completely to the wayside for good.

I have read this pay to play 2.2 all over the internet now. I don't think Epic will ever get 2.2 and it wont as long as Sprint refuses to pay Samsung there extortion fees. No more Samsung for me!

I'm afraid you're right. I'm still well within my 30-day window. Guess I'll be returning it, waiting for the Sprint announcement and that other GSM conference on the 7th and maybe wait it out.

everyone keeps saying that they holding out with the update to sell more phone, while that may make sense for other carriers, samsung hasnt announced any new phones for sprint, so what gives? high costs, or they dont care?

I'm with RAf...just purchased Epic 4G last week, so I need to decide keep vs. return...Thanks to this forum, I've upgraded to 2.2 (DK28), but have yet to notice any real improvement in speed / responsiveness. New features are great (e.g., Skype works on 2.2, not on 2.1), but battery life is still really weak.

Any advice out there for someone in my shoes? If I returned the phone, what should I get?

There seems to be quite a few articles and site taking notice. Yahoo has a big audience that will likely get picked up by others. All of this heat on samsung and the carriers should work to our advantage

well ived have 2.2 for a few days now and have to say I've not had a problem yet. I had a scare when I thought that the build didn't have bookmarks but found out about the tab next to the url address. But no other problems at all. If you guys really hate not getting 2.2, root it and install the test build. Just follow the instructions using through windows. Seems to be the less problem way. If they are waiting for a more stable build,well, they have it. They need to release it.

With the current pace of phone hardware innovations/improvements, combined with carriers essentially eliminating early upgrades (or making them significantly more expensive), I wonder if the software upgrade cycle will have more focus.

I took a flyer on the Epic knowing that it only had to last me a year before I had my next Sprint Premier upgrade if the phone didn't last. With the way things are currently shaping up, there's no way my phone will be anything other than HTC, no matter how attractive any others may seem...

I called sprint to ***** about this very thing told them we are paying extra data for this phone and we need to get the update i told him to till Dan to just pay the stupid fee and get the 2.2 or 2.3 he said it will start coming out Sunday but i doubt that i am sure he just told me that because he wanted to get me off the phone

Looks promising that we will get it eventually - I would really just like a time estimate. Within a week? Within 2 months? "Soon" to me means less than a week, but samsung has been using that terminology for months. I would ideally like to run a stock phone with froyo, but I might have to take the plunge on some custom ROMs...

You know, I might be getting a bit jaded from all of the rumors swirling around about this update, but: "We are working with Samsung..." could be taken as either a technical or a business/legal concept. That is, they could either be working out technical kinks, or they could be working out the contractual issues (as the rumor goes).

Just a thought...

I actually recommended my GF the Epic 4g even though I had a HORRIBLE experience with the Samsung Instankt. Worst mistake ever. Samsung back then literally made the EXACT same promises of software updates and never got close to delivering on them. Anyway I really thought I maybe just had 1 unique bad experience with this company and it wouldn't happen again......WRONG.

After going from the Instank to the Pre and now to the HTC EVO. ALL of my future purchases will be HTC phones. Rock solid phones with a fairly good update rate.

I would even endure Palm's Oreo phones over another Samsung phone.

Yes I am grateful to the forum and it's members but still can't root a phone without a computer. LOL
