ive heard that it has some big issues though. my friend's vibrant keeps crashing, rebooting, factory resetting

I doubt you will ever hear a manufacturer admit that a delay is being caused by persistent software bugs. It's bad PR, makes the product look unreliable. Only the real geeks would appreciate this kind of candor, the average buyer would be scared away.

Case in point - http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-acknowledges-emergency-dial-problem

I don't see anything wrong with issuing a statement similar. It's obvious we've had Eclair and the phone's working great. So for someone to jump ship or act like it's an apocalypse because they're still working out the kinks on a future release is asinine.

I think an important question to be asked about all of this is, will Samsung learn anything from it?

The Nexus S shows they can release and patch an unskinned Android device quickly and cleanly.

Will they learn anything from this whole debacle with their customized handsets?

Frankly, I'm getting annoyed. Samsung is releasing a slew of inferior devices all with 2.2 or 2.3. I can't stand the fact that they've dedicated so much to the nexus...and I feel THAT is an inferior device on an inferior network! IMO, the Epic is the best handset out there. It has a keyboard (sorry iphone lovers), it has an impressive camera, impressive video recording, totally customizable, etc. Now if only they would support the darn thing, it would be outstanding! They should have made this a priority. It's been a month since they "said" we were going to get the update and still, nothing.
I know I can root it and install the DK28 but after several failed attempts and wiping my phone completely a few times, I think I'll wait for the official release...but it might be next CHRISTMAS before we get it! BTW, after rooting, I've noticed several problems I didn't have before. The GPS is TERRIBLE now (doesn't work whatsoever) and the phone frequently freezes up. I can't unlock the screen, can't hang up phone calls, etc.
Anyone else experience that?

I am hearing that the last problem with the official OTA release of 2.2 is the OTA software itself. I don't know the ins and outs of the OTA APIs, but apparently the stock 2.1 release as implemented on the Epic does not implement all of the OTA APIs, or they are buggy, and the 2.2 upgrade requires one or more of them to be able to update without bricking your device. The delay has been to develop a workaround.

There's really no way to release this info without Sprint and Samsung pointing fingers, so they're just both keeping quiet.

The only other alternative would be to release the update as download-only and force you to update via USB from a PC. This may be why the leaked 2.2 update seems to have no problems.

Take that info for what it's worth. Once it's officially available, if ever, they'll never tell us what the delay was about anyway.

That would help explain why T-Mobile released their 2.2 Vibrant update through kies.

Well if it's released as a download, let's hope there's a version that doesn't involve Kies.

If this is true, then here's a suggestion: offer it as a downloadable update while working on OTA. That way, the more technically inclined (mainly, people like the ones who visit this and other similar sites) get what they want, while the unwashed masses would simply wait in blissful ignorance in the meantime.

I think the "technically inclined ... who visit this and other similar sites" are more likely to be unwashed.

Other than that, your theory is sound.

New Info Regarding Sprint

Talked to an insider at Sprint. The announcement in February is the Blackberry Playbook which will sell for $700 and also in the computer it shows Froyo on the Epic for 1/22. Obviously that didn't happen but I wouldn't be surprised if it launches/leaks within the next week. That is all.

I've given up even looking or caring about it anymore. When I turn on my computer and it says on AC's main page Froyo now pushing to Epic then I will believe it.

Yeah I disagree with this statement most ppl agree it will be something with android just due to all the android connected invites.
