The Official : I just cant do it.

While I agree with many of your other points, I think the 4 does in fact have some nice defining features. Whether they appeal to you or not is another story of course. Things like the Soli gestures, 90Hz display, great camera improvements, much better Google Assistant, etc. These are all nice, tangible improvements.

That said, I agree with the 2nd part of your #4. They did just a terrible job of showing off some of this and it totally lacked any energy or flair. They made some exciting features (IMO) seem more boring than they really are.

That 90Hz display is nice but that battery is going to be the - for that feature. The camera is not going to be leaps and bounds better than the Pixel 3 series so it will not be the end all as Apple and others have done enough to close that gap. Google assistant is debatable deepening on usage.

Soli gesture will be that cool at first but they will not be defining for the average joe that keeps their phones in their hand a lot. The camera is going to be a improvement but probably not leaps and bounds just cleaning up from the last series.

I just can't do it because Apple significantly closed the gap on photography wars with Google with the iPhone 11.

I may be petty for saying this, but we all have our own reasons for not buying into the P4.

4. My kids will be introduced to iPhones when they are ready. Family controls, iMessage, Facetime will serve us better than being fragmented across Android and iOS devices.

Speaking of family controls... https://www.washingtonpost.com/tech...ting-apples-parental-controls-is-childs-play/

I may be petty for saying this, but we all have our own reasons for not buying into the P4.

1. I am jelly of the experience iPhone users get with the Apple Watch. I want a proper wearable that is supported and offers tight integration.

2. With the Pixel 3, some callers on the other end can't hear me within the first 5 seconds of a call. I primarily text, so I didn't pursue the manufacturer's warranty options. Hardware can be described as sufficient, but not premium.

3. Apple is starting to figure out the formula for great images by combining software, machine learning, and hardware.

4. My kids will be introduced to iPhones when they are ready. Family controls, iMessage, Facetime will serve us better than being fragmented across Android and iOS devices.

5. 3rd party accessories and cases are plentiful with iPhones.

6. If support or repair is ever needed, I can visit an Apple store if I choose. If my Pixel breaks, I have to mail it in.

My home is filled with Google speakers, Google wifi points, chromecasts, Nest Hello, Nest Hub, etc. I love Google services, apps, and the Assistant. My wife can use all if it just fine on her iPhone 7 plus which leads me to believe that I can use an iPhone and still live in the Google ecosystem.

Not going to response point by point but I've jumped back and forth between Android and iOS a few times, prior to getting the Pixel 3 XL I was using an iPhone X. Both have pros and cons, I'm not a 'fanboy' of either but I thought I would share my perspective for what it is worth.

Apple does get some things absolutely right, they often aren't the first to market with ideas and I know a lot of people give them stick about that but generally speaking when they release a new feature they are polished, face unlock being a great example of this.

As you rightly say the integration between the Apple Watch and the iPhone is fantastic, the biggest thing I miss from my iPhone X is my Apple Watch, rather than feeling like a device that connected to my phone it felt like an extension of my phone and for me that is what it should feel like.

For me the problem with iPhones is just how controlled everything is, this does have it's benefits, generally speaking everything just works because the software and hardware were built for one another, every element of the UI is controlled and app developers have a few phone models to build apps for rather than thousands.

But, an iPhone has never felt like my phone, it feels like it's Apple's phone that they are reluctantly allowing me to use.

Little things like control of the home screen, icon packs, launcher options etc make a huge difference to me, if I get tired of my phone a few changes here or there and it feels like a different phone but with an iPhone it gets old quick especially if you go from one iPhone to another iPhone. For me buying a new phone is one of my highlights during a year and with an iPhone within 5 minutes of getting it out the box I often feel disappointed because no matter how great the hardware is iOS is dull. With Android you have so much granular control but with iOS your options are basically on or off if you are even that lucky, if you want to use your device in a way other than what the ghost of Steve Jobs wants you to use it then it won't end well for you.

Now that's how it feels for me and I'm obviously not everyone else, again Apple's approach has plenty of advantages but for me if I'm spending the best part of £1,000 on a phone I want it to feel new and unique and for me the flexibility that Android phones provide delivers just that.

I just can't do it.

I'd consider the OnePlus 7 line of phones going forwards but they're too big for my liking. Where else can I get a somewhat clean Android experience?

Not sure if it has been mentioned here yet, but I am also troubled by the decision to drop the fingerprint sensor.

I use it extensively, to the point that I take my phone from my left front pocket and in a single natural motion it is unlocked before traverses the distance into my line of sight.

Yes, I get the idea that the new face unlock is supposed to be just as effective, but suppose it wasn't my intent to unlock my phone? If I take my 3XL out of my pocket with the intent of putting it down on my desk, it doesn't unlock itself. From what I can see, the 4 will insist on unlocking itself unless I ensure that it never gets a look at my face.

And, how do I prevent my co-worker or wife from picking up my phone and pointing it in my general direction, thus unlocking it?

No, not a fan of face unlock at all...

Yeah, I get that I don't have to use it, but that means I am left with entering my pin every time I want to unlock the phone.

What phone do you have at the moment?

Oh I'm not thinking of upgrading. I have the Pixel 3. I just mean looking forwards into the future. Google seems to want to keep sacrificing battery life and with the death of the unlimited photo storage, front facing speakers, and fingerprint sensor (yes I still love this instead of face unlock) these devices are just not looking appealing to me anymore. The only sacrifice being the amazing camera.

The camera on the 3 is still pretty amazing.

Without the cut and pastes from the previous posts... the 4 does have improvements. And, like many of us, I've pre-ordered every Nexus and Pixel immediately after it was available. I figure I've burned somewhere between $1K and $2K just to be able to say I have the "latest and greatest" - which, very few really gave a crap about. So, I figure I'm going to delay my cycle by six months when the price drops. I'll still have a device that's cutting edge but will same lots of money by holding off my impulse buy just a bit. Use that saved money to enjoy some nice cigars and whiskey, whilst my 3XL is still rockin'.

Agreed. The price is too much; trade-in value doesn't seem that great; and I'm a bit underwhelmed by the battery life.

But it still looks like a great phone, and will definitely keep an eye out for how it does!

I think Google should treat their returning customers better. I traded my 2 year old iPhone 10 in for a $400 credit to purchase my 11. Google is only offering me $260 for my 1 year old 3xl that I bought direct. Gonna wait this one out a bit.

I just can't do it right now. I usually preorder but this time I'm gonna hold off for a bit.

Ah yes - that was one other thing that unnerved me - only having the Face Unlock as the only security feature.

Sticking with P2XL even though the camera stopped working. It's otherwise chugging along just fine. If the P4XL had a FP reader I would buy it. Will probably look for a P3XL on secondary market. Best wishes to all regardless of which model you own or plan to buy.

Ugh! Now I don't know what to do. I need a new phone soon and was hoping they would pull out a surprise. I guess I will wait for black Friday deals and pick either the 4 or the note.

I'm not paying no $999 for this phone, that's over a grand after taxes. I'll wait for the prices to come down on Swappa, then maybe

Best thing to do is wait, Google will run $200 -$300 off in Jan/Feb when this model doesn't move in stock..

Personally I'm not purchasing anything, phones are getting too big for me and I will hold on to my Pixel 3 because it's the perfect size for my needs.

Best of luck to all who purchase before 2020

The new pixel 4 did nothing for me today my Note 10 plus is still the winner in my mind. Google didn't wow me at all plus there are a lot of things they needed to update and they didn't. So for me the new pixel 4 is a no go.
