The ONE time I forgot to put my phone in my waterproof case

Hey guys I recently went on vacation last week on a cruise. I wanted to get some nice underwater shots and beach shots since we were going to the Caribbean Islands. I left my waterproof case at home as we boarded the ship. I ended up buying another one while on the cruise ship before we got to our first stop. Everything was going great. Beautiful pictures and videos captured our first couple days on the ship were perfect for telling a story. Then we got to our first beach and we went snorkeling. I had everything I needed. Except swimming skills.lol I floated around helplessly in the 40 feet clear waters. I didn't actually capture much stunning underwater footage as I was just trying to stay afloat. My wife got a real kick out of my inadequate swimming skills since she swims very well. Anyway we got back in the catamaran and they told us our next stop was the beach. Naturally I had no further plans of getting back into the water further than feet deep so my wife and I were looking back at the photos outside of the case. I took some more pictures and video on our way to the beach. And then it happened. I naturally put the phone into my pocket and fired off some shots with my mirrorless camera. We had to get in waist deep water to get to the beach. I packed all of my precious cargo into my bag and as I'm walking in the water with my arms raised over my head as to not get anything wet I suddenly realize that I didn't take my phone out of my pocket and put back into my bag. Of course at that point it was too late. I got on the beach and quickly took the phone out of pocket to inspect it but there was nothing there but a lifeless screen. Of course I take full responsibility for not putting the phone back in my bag or the waterproof case but I was using a lot of different devices(my Lumia 1020 as well as the Sony a6000) and I simply forgot as I didn't plan to get back in the water again. I took the phone back to the ship and swapped batteries to see if I could revive it and the screen cut on instantly but started flickering with the LG logo on display. I quickly removed the battery as I heard a frying sound. Long story not so short, I lost my phone in a situation I was technically prepared for but simply made a mistake. However all my pictures and video are intact as I checked the memory card on my laptop. I will be uploading tons of pics and video and a cinematic video when I get my shiny new V20 in the mail this week. The moral of the story is if you buy a waterproof case to use your V20 in water conditions, make sure you use it and save yourself the pain of having to wonder about all the shots and memories you could've made on your vacation. I did get a good three and half days of pics and video before this incident occurred so still plenty of content. This is the one reason I may spring for the V30. You know. Just in case.lol

I can't go back to non-waterproof phones now because of situations like that hehe. On my brief time with a V20, when the thing freaked out with no sound for two days after installing a wet-application screen protector, I knew: this was NOT the phone for me (plus, even phones I owned before that weren't waterproof-rated had no issues with the screen protectors, but this one did).

That's odd....while I never installed a wet type protector, I've gotten the screen wet and no issues.

All the new phones that are water resistant are not rated to be used in saltwater if memory serves me right... So is the v30 going to be rated for saltwater??

Bummer about your phone and I'm glad you got your pictures and video back BTW

Only the ones flagged as "Rugged" are; the rest are just rated for sweet water splash/immersion. But even if not rated doe salt water they at least offer a degree of protection.

Thanks. Yeah I think the saltwater killed it more than anything since it did attempt to cut on when I placed a fresh battery in it. At least it has expandable storage though. I could only imagine how I would have felt had I had a Google Pixel or an iPhone. My replacement device will be in tomorrow. In light of everything I really think I'll stick with the V20 and keep it as a dependable and enjoyable backup device. This was a very unique and specific situation that only occurred because (a) I was on vacation and (b) I wanted to get some unique shots using the waterproof case. And maybe I was juggling one too many devices although I was able to soldier on with the Lumia 1020 which proved to still hold its ground for stills. Not so much for video though.

It wasn't the saltwater. Saltwater doesn't have an immediate effect compared to freshwater. For future reference if your phone gets wet, pull the battery as soon as possible and don't put a battery back in until it has dried out. If a phone isn't cooked already after imersion in salt water you have a small chance of saving it by rinsing it in fresh water and letting dry out. Even if it gets saved chances are some of the circuitry will eventually corrode .

If it was saltwater, an IP rating wouldn't be of much help since the seals will degrade much faster.

Freshwater won't do much damage if properly dried. Saltwater, however, will.

It's a V20 so the IP rating does not come into play.
The only chance you have with salt water is to rinse it thoroughly with fresh water on a phone with a removable back like the V20. In most cases its too late because the battery usually cooks some of the circuitry. If you are able to get it going some of the circuitry may go bad anyway down the road anyway.

I live near the beach. I always keep my V20 in a Wapag pouch to prevent sand and salt water from damaging my phone. When it rings, it takes me a little while to get it out because I have a case on it and I usually miss the call. I knew when I bought this phone that crap would happen to it on the beach. Sorry for your issue. I still prefer the ability to change my batteries.

Even if your phone is IP-rated for water immersion/splashes, it's always a good idea to keep it protected near the ocean. Salt water corrodes seals (and still acts on the device long after it's been dried if the salt isn't rinsed off), and sand can scratch glass VERY easily, even Gorilla glass.

Also, when taking calls with a pouch, try it without taking it out! It works on mine :) hehe It's a little weird at first and volume can be a bit muted (so won't work on a very noisy beach) but it works!

I dropped my V20 twice in water, no problems. maybe because have DBrand Skin (Leather)?

pulled it out rather quickly but whirlpool was about 1 Meter deep, though.

I never make nice wideangle shots above the water surface again.

problem solved, no waterproof needed.

If I'm anywhere near water (at least if planned ahead), either hiking or going to the beach, I always have my waterproof bag. You don't want sand on your phone either, waterproof or not.

Waterproof phones have crappy speakers. It's just a fact. Would rather have better speakers and removable battery. I've had the water resistant Galaxy S6 & S7 active, barely even used it. There were reports of the Galaxy S7 Active failing water resistant tests so I wouldn't have dared to submerge it anyways.

Freshwater won't do much damage if properly dried. Saltwater, however, will.

What about chlorine water? Swimming in pools? I'm sure the chemicals will corrod the internals. So how can you even use it in water anyways? Waterproof bags are the way to go, much safer.

Next time, save the photos to the microSD card. The microSD card is water-resistant. Just however, do not remove the SD card while the phone is powered on, it will get corrupted. A friend's phone was water damaged (Galaxy S4 Active waterproofing failed). However, pictures were still accessable from the microSD.

I thought he mentioned that the pics are fine..
