Apple controls the release, price, distribution, and just about everything else that has to do with the iPhone. Very little was in the hands of Verizon for that launch.
Because there is only 1 iPhone and 20+ Androids. As a result, Apple gets to say, "Play our way or we'll take our phone somewhere else."

Not being able to keep them in stock is a good sign actually. That generally means they are selling well. As I recall, they had trouble keeping the X in stock at least they did locally.

Yes, but there's only one Nexus. I can understand that they wouldn't be able to do it for all Android phones. But, I don't see why they couldn't do it for the Nexus.
And only 1 Bionic, 1 Thundebold, 1 Razr, blah, blah, blah. Don't fool yourself...we might know that the Nexus is special, but to the masses, it's just another Android.
Yes, but it's not just another Android to Google. While I know the Nexus doesn't appeal to the masses, I think it really only needs to appeal to Google. IMO they should treat it like their sacred cow and have control over it like Apple does with the iPhone.
The problem with that idea is that Google is not in the same position as Apple, which makes both hardware and firmware for the iPhone. Apple can effectively do whatever it wants, so long as its marketing machine can drum up demand for the product. Google has to take the needs of third-party manufacturers into account, which probably makes it more beholden to the carriers as well.
Maybe that will change when/if Google acquires its own manufacturing capacity in the form of Motorola. The problem there is that Google doesn't have have the same level of "cult buyers' that Apple does. And I say that as an iPhone user. People buy Apple products almost reflexively. Google has a long ways to go to reach that, even if the Moto buyout goes through.
I'm guessing that Google is as frustrated with this as anyone else. They clearly tried to position the GNex as an "iPhone killer" and gain more marketing exposure. The delay only dilutes their brand strength compared to Apple.
On the other hand, even a Dec. 8 release is only a couple weeks away. We can probably all manage to survive until then.

Phone geeks (I'm not being derogatory...really) have strong preferences in OS, but many average consumers probably don't care so much if their fancy new phones are running Google or Microsoft firmware. Samsung can make Windows Phone devices just as easily as they can make Android devices, and carriers can choose whatever they want. Google has established the Android brand enough to have business leverage, but not even remotely as much leverage as Apple has.
Microsoft treats PC makers like hired help when it comes to Windows, but they have no real competitor in that market. Google does have serious competitors for Android, so they can't afford to engage in similar types of strong-arming.
Ya know what, while browsing through all of the "Nervous Nexus" threads ranting about the obvious, I decided to look into the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. And ya know what, that's a pretty damn good phone. I'm gonna go as far to say that it looks even better than the Nexus that hasn't even been released! I mean check specs and you'll surely agree. I'm going to an AT&T store today to look at it and can't rule out not jumping the big red ship for AT&T. I'm out of contract, and why wait when there's the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket that blows away the RAZR and Nexus!
What really sells me on it is it has the best of both the RAZR and Nexus without sacrifice.

- 4.5" Super AMOLED screen!

I mean c'mon, that's everything the Nexus and RAZR have rolled into one badass phone. After looking at it I might be leaving VZW, screw waiting around on VZW.

You're in Pennsylvania. From everything I've heard, you really don't want AT&T. Choosing a carrier is probably more important than choosing the phone. I'm on AT&T in the DC area, and I can confirm that it sucks in terms of coverage. I haven't heard anything good about AT&T in the Northeast. In some other areas of the country it's the preferred carrier, but not here. I get OK coverage when I travel to Philly, but also the same sorts of slowdowns and lapses that I get in DC.
I don't believe AT&T even has any LTE markets yet in Pa. I'm planning to switch over to Verizon for the coverage, despite their corporate evilness. Just waiting for the darned Nexus...
Yeah according to their website they didn't launch LTE in my market yet. So I could just go with the regular Galaxy S2 then and upgrade later. Heck both AT&T and Verizon won't have their LTE networks built out till 2013 so why hurry to get an LTE device now. They still have their HSPA+ in Pennsylvania.
What do you mean "from everything I've heard, you don't want AT&T". Their coverage map shows blanketed voice and data where I live in PA and I have a ton of co-workers with AT&T iPhones and my Dad has the original Galaxy S and he gets good coverage.
