The phone WE want vs. the phone THEY tell us we want...

Really? Too many people? I see a lot of people on the accessories forum frustrated with the curved screen. Can't install screen protector and case at the same time.

Well, that might be the case, but Samsung's push to curve all the things was based on the sales trends that they saw with the S6 and S7 Edge...people wanted the curves. The buying public is often easily swayed by shiny objects, and often throw functional needs out the window because the phone looks so purty.

I'll admit, playing with my wife's old S7 Edge... the phone does have a striking look. But for the reasons you mention.... meh, I'd prefer a good ol' fashioned flat panel.

It's all marketing. Which came first, the Chicken or the Egg? We all know it was the Chicken, but that's beside the point. So which came first, the advertising/marketing, or the sales which funds the marketing? It had to be the marketing first. Without advertising nobody would hear of a product and therefore nobody would buy it. So you have to spend money to make money. The more you spend on advertising the more you get back on sales. This has nothing to do with which phone works the best because in 2017 nearly all phones work acceptably well. Pick any phone that has comparable ability as the S8 or the iPhone 7 and I guarantee that if the manufacturer of that phone did as much advertising as Samsung or Apple that they would sell more phones. Would they take the lead in sales? Maybe

Samsung is no longer making what I want - a flagship smartphone with a FLAT, rather than curved, display panel.

I can't agree with this sentiment enough. Samsung spec-wise did everything right but I really wish they offered a flat-screen version of the S8 series like they did with the S7 line.

Samsung can never make the phone everyone wants. That's a losing battle, because people are hard wired to complain about something. If they released nothing but flat models, people would just move on to the next complaint. They SHOULD make the phone they want. It seems to be working.

Samsung Pay is amazing. It truly is the way of the future. Paying is much easier and faster, and also more secure.

I'm really glad it's such a great innovation! I've never owned a Samsung product so I have only heard that it's great, you know? I should convince my mom to download it on her S6 Edge. 😃

I do not like the bixby button, I do not like bixby, I do like the curved display, I do not the annoying Samsung set up pop ups, I do not like the new peach background for messages, I do not like the like screen transition,I do not like that the bluetooth does not work with my plantronics device, i do not like that it is not resistant to weather or shock, I do not like the fact that screen protection is not available, I do not like all the Samsung packages that I will not use that consume memory and processing. There should be an opt out of Samsung packages, I do not like the settings navigation... Maybe I need to get use to it - I found the old set up more intuitive.
I am getting use to the virtual navigation buttons. I dunno if I like the side pop up panel yet, kind of annoying until I get used to it... Again an opt out of features would be nice
The S8 has some cool stuff...
I like the memory, I like the speed, I like the camera, I like the display.

I am glad my s5 is still around for backup.

Can you imagine if they gave us a 2017 version of the Note 4 in the Note 8? Removable battery, IR blaster. large, FLAT display, 6GB ram, 4k display? Like the Note 4 at the time had everything in it.

Btw I still see tons of people rocking Note 4s when I'm out and about including where I work.

As a Note 4 owner that's truly the only kind of device that would get my attention! :D Sadly Samsung seems to think they can just slap a S Pen into their latest S series device and call it a Note. :(

Not completely true. The Note 7 was better than the S7 in every way.

Flat yes, that'd be cool. 4K, IR, Removable battery, SD card slot, those things don't really belong on phones at this point.

No use for it other than vr on such a tiny screen. Sony did it and backed off.

My ideal phone is big, great battery life, great display, no SD card, metal body, flat screen, up to date on the latest software and guaranteed to be up to date on security patches. I can compromise on a few of the first things on the list, but latest software and security is not optional.
Why no SD card? I think additional, removable storage is essential.
