The Pixel 3 uses LG / 3 XL uses a Samsung screen panel

Re: The Pixel 3 and 3 XL use a Samsung screen panel

That investment was just last April. Not like it was years ago.

LG been making since Nexus days
I'm just happy that they smarten up and went with Samsung. I do think they listen to these forums to some degree.

Interesting. I thought the 3 and 3XL had different displays (the smaller being FHD and the larger QHD). I've noticed that the output between the 3 and 3 XL displays are not the same. If you hold the two phones side by side and look at the same images, you will see that the smaller 3 has slightly higher contrast and that there is a higher red cast (more noticeable on skin tones). Not garish by any means, it's still a great display and side by side some might could argue that the XL is too low in contrast. However, all things being equal (both set to adaptive display, same brightness etc.), the output is not the same.

Re: The Pixel 3 and 3 XL use a Samsung screen panel

Since Google is using Samsung's OLEDs do you all think that Google wasted their money investing in LG Display?

Not at all. If they would have used LG panels, you would probably see a lot more butthurt running rampant in this forum.

LG's panels probably weren't ready for this gen, so they switched to Sammy. I'd bet they make the switch back next year, or the year after, they just have to wait until that money the invested yields results.

Re: The Pixel 3 and 3 XL use a Samsung screen panel

The smaller Pixel 3 is also Samsung? iFixit is a little vague on that specifically.

The smaller Pixel has always used Samsung panels. One the XL models, the first was a Samsung and the 2nd was an LG.

You've got to love reviewers who have said that the Pixel 3 XL screen, although excellent, just isn't quite as good as a Samsung screen! :D

Some have claimed better. We have to take in consideration that even if the displays are technically identical that calbration can make the screens appear different.

Well now... Why would Samsung sell their best screens to competitors? So while technically the Pixels screens are Samsung, they are perhaps an inferior batch compared to what Samsung uses in their own phones.

Everything has a price

Ouch! Looks like we're still going to be using second class inferior screens.

That's just hogwash. They are not inferior. Some have stated that the screens are the best they have seen. People were OK with the smaller Pixels screen last year and it was Samsung.
Are you saying that the screens they sell Apple are interior too?

Sometimes people can't let go and admit something they dislike might actually be decent.

Re: The Pixel 3 and 3 XL use a Samsung screen panel

Since we have two Pixel 3 XL's coming it will be interesting to compare them.

Over the past 3 days, I have been to 7 different Best Buys. I've compared a 3XL and a 3 at each one. I got the same, consistent results at each location.

Side-by-side, the XL looks white and the 3 looks horribly red - I could have sworn that night shift was on. It's that bad when they're side-by-side.

Here's a pic that, surprisingly, reduces the red tiny by quite a bit. It's much worse in person.

At least this year, the gimp screen is not on the XL! Win!

I've compared them. Separately, they each look amazing and 'normal.'

Side-by-side, one looks white and the other looks horribly red - I could have sworn that night shift was on. It's that bad when they're side-by-side.

Two 3XLs or a 3XL and a 3?

Re: The Pixel 3 and 3 XL use a Samsung screen panel

Sorry for the confusion - one of each. I updated my post with more details.

The screens do have a different resolution but I'm not sure that would explain the disparity.
I was only at Best Buy once and didn't take a hard look at the difference because I was there with someone else. I was more concerned with the XL and the body colors and knew I was not purchasing the smaller one. Like you said both individually look great. I did hold them side by side but not to a strict level of examination.

I miss out , saying the regular 3 has red tint to it ?

While I ordered the 3XL for the new TMobile bands, my 2XL screen is spectacular, while there were probably a few bad batches of the LG panel, the whole episode seemed completely overblown.
