So I've been attempting to update my phone to 6.12.181.en.US but every time it DL's I tap install and sure enough the phone reboots and says "The update failed" -- anyone seen this before or have any suggestions? I also did a factory reset (afterwards it still didn't install) in preparation for my hopefully soon yummy serving of ICS. Thanks ya'll!

Are you rooted? Are you trying to use RSD? Need a little more info about where you are starting from...

Sure thing, yes, I was rooted, but I figured a factory reset would put me back to vanilla so I did that but still same issue. No, I'm not using RSD nor have I ever -- thanks for the reply!

Did you uninstall or freeze any bloatware after you rooted?

did you ever use bootstrap? If so see my other post. there are manual steps needed to remove bootstrap "shtuff" after you uninstall it.

Well there's your problem. You're going to have to download matts utility and flash back to complete stock before you can even think about updating

I had the same issue with my DX. I had to fully .sbf back to reinstall the bloatware. From there I was able to get the latest updates.

most problems are self induced, if your going to play with root, you have to have a very good understanding of what you are doing. To fix your problem, undo everything you did

i had the same problem (caused by the same thing - rooting and removing bloatware)

I tried doing a factory reset at least 4 times, no joy on any of them.

I finally just took it to a VZW store. the first store I went to didnt have any answers and suggested I call motorola cause my razr failed to install verizons update.

the 2nd store I went to couldnt get the update to install, so they sent me a replacement phone in the mail (which came with the update AFTER the one I was trying to install).

might try that.

They sent you a replacement? Did they know if you were rooted or not? I know, stupid question, just had to ask :)

*shrug*

the guy at the store never asked. I never said...

my phone was factory stock, other than the stuff that rooting left on it

Come on people if your going to root learn a thing or to. Doing a factory reset WILL not remove root will not restore missing apps. You need to sbf or use kit to restore your phones. If you would have done this your phone would have taken the update. There a ton of threads stating to receive a ota you need to b 100% stock. I do believe u can use voodoo root keeper to save your root.

I've rooted 2 phones before my Razr and to me all it causes more problems then its worth. So you can have free hotspot that works 50% of the time, freeze apps that cause more problems then its worth, overclock the phone 10% so it has a 1/2 battery life, possibly bricking the phone, causes issues with updates like this one and voiding your warranty on your $500 phone. Why I left my Razr alone and stock. I know I was no help to your problem lol.

I actually had the same error. I have never rooted my RAZR Maxx. It failed twice so I master reset then phone and now I am stuck with Gingerbread 2.3.6 again and when I press to check for updates...it thinks it is up to date again. I was so excited!! *sigh*

I can't think of what else to do to try and push it thru since it doesn't see the ICS update now. How would a master reset clear that out?

If you actually know what you're doing with root then it causes no problems. You would know that you should make a backup in cwm of your stock rom before you make any changes in titanium. That way if something goes wrong all you have to do it restore the back up and all is well again. You should never return a phone without first in rooting it. They can see that its rooted and might charge you the fill price for the replacement phone.
