Thoughts on the JB OTA Install

Curious on other's thoughts on *best policy* for a major update. I, like most others, have a number of apps that will not be compatible with the impending JB update. I know the install will automatically detect & remove them as required but is there any benefit to removing any apps known to be incompatible (to extent possible) before upgrading? I would think not since there are many that cannot be removed unless rooted.

As a separate question, I would also think clearing the cache is always a good idea after updating. Anyone disagree?

I would wipe the cache position after the update. Factory reset if it isn't too much hassle, but only if you're not in the soak test.

Run it for 48 hours then clean/clear/reset. It won't remove incompatible apps automagically that I'm aware of. Never has for me.

If something major does happen then do earlier of course. Before you reset backup the files for local saved data.

Wish more developers supported cloud storage sync. I haven't found a good app for that yet.

Anyone who installed/side loaded JB leak in Christmas (like me), please let me know if this update will replace that one or what I have to do prep my phone. Thanks.

For any major update (in this case, I'm talking major release i.e. Gingerbread to ICS, ICS to Jelly Bean - not a fix that applies to one of those releases), I take the OTA, let it fully boot back into the system, then do a factory reset.

If the full flash file leaks, I may just use that instead of doing a reset.

With these major updates, I find that starting as fresh as possible leads to a better experience. Of course, YMMV.

I updated today over the Christmas leak.NOTE: two updates were released today, one for phones on the ICS 211 build, and the other for phones on the Christmas update. You shouldn't need to do any prep if you have the stock Christmas leak, other than making sure that your phone has a good charge and having an SD card installed.

What about those of us with root? Is it just a matter of backing up in Titanium, unrooting using Voodoo, installing, and then doing the reverse afterward? And, if we are rooted, will we still automatically get the update for the Christmas update? Is it the update that ends in .16, which is the one that was downloaded today (but which I haven't installed yet).

I think i am going to skip it entirely. Why take the chance? My JB leaked version works fine. That being said I would like the ?real one" but I don't want to mess up my phone!!

I would probably follow the steps to keep root going yo JB. I believe it was temp unroot then root then temp unroot again then upgrade

I may do that. I really want to factory reset too but I have read that it can screw up root too. So both at once could be bad.

I just updated over the Christmas leak with no problem. I was rooted and I used Voodoo to save root. Rerooted with no problem. Go Launcher screens were unaffected. Hotspot SQL hack carried over. In my case, it was very uneventful. Didn't do factory reset or clear data. Nothing but save root. PS, I have the plain jane Razr.

Your killing me now I'm going to have to do it! Thanks though!!!!
Any differences from the Christmas one.?

Haven't really noticed anything yet. There's probably bloatware that's gone. I should look over the list of changes and check. PS, I made sure that I had the most current Superuser and SU binary first. I already did so I didn't really have to do anything there either. That should be something that you check on first. And remember to unroot and reroot a couple of times in Voodoo first. PPS, I haven't frozen any apps so I didn't really have to worry about that.

I just unfrozen all of mine. So it shouldn't be a problem I hope. I will root and unroot a few times. Thanks for the tips. I only have supersu though. I'm going to download superuser though....

Edit: I'm confused. Do you have both supersu and superuser? Or just superuser?

Just curious... Why 48 hours?

I have superuser. I used to make sure that the binary was up to date.

With a heavy heart I have to announce that I'm still waiting for the update. Did the reboot trick, no dice.

Rebooting the phone will sometimes trigger the upgrade. Don't know why. It didn't help me. :(
