Thunderbolt: Apps that are safe to remove once rooted (and how to put them back!)

Anybody working on the various weather apps? Only the widget is on the safe list but there are several .apk files supporting the standalone app as well. Who knew downloading a 5 day forecast was so tough.

Just moved them all to the sd card then restarted. got htc.bgp service has stopped error, but could be cause I also moved twitter. Will see.

Okay, followed the following step from Cory and everything seems okay after removing all weather related apks and widgets:

[*] If it's Sense related (e.g., one of the widgets), you MUST go into settings > applications > manage applications > HTC Sense > and clear data; otherwise, they will not show up in the widget pick list. After you do so, Sense will revert back to the out of the box config; including wallpapers, widgets, etc.

Never mind. Still getting com.htc.bgp error. Not sure if it is related to weather or twitter so will restore nandroid and go more slowly.

Okay. Restored nandroid backup to rooted stock rom, then deleted weather related apps and widgets only. immediately got com.htc.bgp error. Also loaded weatherbug elite as a replacement so it could be the combination. Settles it for me though.

Titanium BU doesn't work

I successfully rooted. ShootMe and Root Explorer both work, although ShootMe is the only thing that shows up in Super User. Got the BusyBox as Titanium instructed, but still won't access root. IDEAS?

Figured it out. Had to do reboot and then still had to run BusyBox. After reboot all programs showed up in Super User.

Found 2 more things out. The free version of Titanium "backed up" everything, but when I did some file renaming in Root Explorer and did a reboot I found out that Titanium didn't do any backups or it lost the back up that it did. Get what you pay for? Also, renamed VCast and the app is still functioning even after reboot. Renamed it "VCast.apk.crap"

Weather Widgets are on the list. The weather app itself is not. It's integrated into Sense.

I have never had any luck with that app. I would do Nandroid backups via ROM Manager instead.

I just tried to put all the apps I deleted back into the "app" folder (because I need to exchange my phone) but after I did this I got error messages and now my phone won't reboot. I think where I went wrong was hitting "select all" from my replacement Thunderbolts "app" folder and pasting it into the "app" folder on my defective Thunderbolt. I thought that it would be quicker because it would just replace all the apps that I deleted... apparently I was wrong. Was that a $700 mistake, or is there anyway to recover, or even turn on, my Thunderbolt?!?! Someone please help!

Edit: Never mind, I'd never done a recovery from clockworkmod recovery before. How do I donate to ClockworkMod? They saved me from a heart attack.

So just adding ".old" to the end of file name makes is "dead" and never starts up no matter what? :) Including removing the icon?

We don't need to literally move a file when killing bloatware?

Correct. Only move apps if it makes you feel good. There is plenty of space on the TBolt that you don't need to move things. At best, you will save about 175MB.

How would I 'unroot' my Thunderbolt just in case something goes wrong? Also, will I still be able to receive/install updates to the android OS? PS: I'm new at droid but getting familiar quickly.

What about "app killer" or task killer? There is so much good and bad review. Should killing it (add 'old') by doing your way via Root stuff be THE way to stop apps?

Yes, you can:

Main menu of Titanium, Hit you menu Button
Select Batch
There is a pre program in there to backup all apps or all apps plus data.
Hit run on the one you want
Then in next window click select all to enusre all, or go through list a click ones you dont want etc.
Click run

There ya go!

Help me out here on Titanium Backup (TB): when backing up ALL apps and data, does TB kinda "image" the phone?

I.e. when I do restore, TB will put EVERYTHING, including apps, data, systems stuff, and how the phone was configured, etc. into the phone in its proper folder and everything is back to right how was it?

How do you remove Google Lattitude? I don't see it in /system/app.

Additionally, I moved VCast.apk to my SD card, yet the icon is still shown in the "All application".

I moved the Kindle APK to my SD card but now "com.amazon.kindle" appears in the app list and when I run it, it just tells me there is an issue with Kindle and it has to force close.

Any way to remove it? I didn't see while browsing with super manager.
