Thunderbolt Battery Complaints + Tips/Tricks

mine lasted from 7am yesterday til about 10pm with normal use. The last hour was playing with the phone consistanly and drained from 30% to dead in a hour. Screen is the biggest power hog.

You must have gotten some superphone to have it last 15 hours. I am at work and it is pretty much in my pocket or just turning it on to check email and the battery is draining even while the screen is off. It has been about 4 hours now and I will be lucky to get another 4 hours out of it since it drains without even being used. Again I haven't played any games and used very little internet so far today. I am coming from a droid 1 and that wasn't the best battery life but this is terrible.

It's actually kind of funny that I can watch the battery percent drop while just staring at the screen. Since my post 5 minutes ago I've lost another 4%. How are people even using basic functions on this phone and making it through more than 8 hours ?

HTC needs to sell a movie stand for the Thunderbolt (sarcasm)

Because you have to have your phone plugged in in order to watch the whole movie - because the battery would crap out on you a quarter of the way through the movie. BUT you can't use the kick stand with the charger plugged in!!

I rented a Blockbuster movie, just trying out the phone features, I used the box the phone came in to set my phone on and let the charger cord hang over the edge.

Nice job HTC!

As its been said before, battery life will depend on the settings you have on the phone. Out of the box it will suck battery life the way you're seeing now.

I currently use a HTC Hero with a setup that gets me 2-3 days of regular use (texting and occasional browsing) life out of a single charge. This can also be accomplished with phones like the EVO which means the Thunderbolt should be about the same. I found that removing the bloatware (Facebook for example) helps tremendously as that app likes to update every 15 minutes.

What helped the most was rooting and adjusting the CPU clocks. This doesnt necessarily mean overclocked all the time but only when the greatest demand for the CPU is required. My Hero runs at 528Mhz stock and it stays that way unless it needs more power then it bumps up to 691Mhz. At idle it drops to 176Mhz while the stock setting is for twice that.

these stories of dreadful rapid battery drainages are puzzling to me. granted, my battery hasn't been AMAZING but it has been more than acceptable. not really doing have so far let the phone completely drain twice before recharging to 100 percent. no bump charging. plan on doing this a few more times before just using it as i normally would.

Aren't you not supposed to do this with Lithium ion batteries?

Long press on it until the phone vibrates and you see a trash can at the bottom of the screen, then drag it to the trash.

I've tried doing this and when I drag the item down to the remove/trash the item is still there. It doesn't really remove. Any other way to get rid of apps I don't want?

ETA: I found my answer elsewhere.

DON'T I REPEAT DON'T leave your phone off for a long period of time with fast boot on. turnfast boot off before you do.

What good is a phone like Thunderbolt, if you have to turn most things off and the few things you leave on have to be set to the very lowest levels of performance JUST to get you through MOST of the day before RECHARGING?

The HTC Hero and EVO have nothing to do with this underpowered phone. The Thunderbolt has more power and faster everything with LESS battery power than either of those other HTC's. HTC underpowered this phone, plan and simple - They were probably limited by internal space, meaning they wanted to keep this phone the same size (using same parts) as their other "EVO" equivalent phone bodies. They just didn't have enough room for an adequate battery. They SHOULD have MADE room for a battery that would power this phone ALL day.

The EVO has lower specs with a more powerful battery.
The Bionic has higher specs with a very powerful (yet to be proven to be adequate) battery.

The phone it's self is nice, but people are either going to have to:
1. Charge their phone 2-3 times day.
2. Buy the hump battery.
3. Clip a battery charging pack to their belts to hook up to their Thunderbolt.
4. Or maybe go back to the 1970's days of the "bag" cell phone.

Anyone know how to shut off the phone-wide haptic feedback? I turned off both of my keyboards' haptic feedback but the phone's still run.

I may not be seeing it but where in settings can I check how long my phone last been charged and check usage on battery life?

I know many people are seeing bad battery life and I thought I would see the same or similar battery issues. However, my battery life has been very acceptable, considering how powerful the Thunderbolt is. So far this morning, I unplugged from charging around 8:30 AM. After that, I checked Twitter posts, checked the weather, made and received about 3 calls, and tried out the car dock (with no power connected to it) while using Tango for video chat (3 different times)....I live in a 3G only area by the way. I sent a few text messages and played around with the phone in general between all of that. I also have my Wifi and GPS turned on. While using the car dock, I also tried the navigation (which works and looks GREAT on the TB). I have my brightness set at roughly 60%. I have all animations turned on as well. Currently, my battery is at 84% still!!! So, 4.5 hours later, I still have a very large part of my battery charge left.

Some minor settings I have put in place to help out with the battery life include installing Advanced Task Killer from the market. I have set the application kill level to "Crazy" and to kill the running apps when the screen turns off. I have added the apps I want to stay open to the "Ignore" list. That includes 5 apps I don't mind running in the background.

Again, I am very pleased with how much battery life I am getting, even with all of the bloatware installed. I will be super excited after it is rooted and I can remove all of it. I'm sure the battery life will be much better then.

I hope this helps others with their battery issues.

Happy Bolting!!!

Another data point. From a full charge (no bump charging, just regular charge), its been 2 hours, 34 minutes. two phone calls, some emails, twitter. battery at 93%. Turning off the blockbuster app was the big deal for me.

Menu->Settings -> Sounds -> scroll down to the bottom and u'll see "Vibrate Feedback" turn that off. I think that's what ur looking for. I twas annoyng that you can just disable everything in one spot. But now its done haha

One thing that bothers me with this phone is that when i look at what the battery is being sucked by the dislay is usually 65%-78%. Now idk about you guys but my screen is about not evrn 25% all the time...is there a bug in sense possibly? & yes i have tweaked all other settings so that evrrything that syncs doesnt sync every hour but evrry 4 hours. Idk but i hope htc or google find and fix it fast.

I agree with you man. This is ridiculous. I think my battery loses a one percent every 5 minutes. No bueno

Battery "issues"

Ok, everyone. I know this phone is "new" and people are going to have issues. It's a well known fact that at launch, phones need to work out their quirks when in the hands of thousands of consumers.

So let's get on to the analogy.

For the slower people, i will reference the thunderbolt as a corvette and phones with 24 hour battery life as a civic hybrid.

You cannot go out an buy a v8 and not expect it to guzzle gas. You hit the gas pedal and it sucks gas like a corner working gal in need of her next fix. The thunderbolt is going to use battery as fast as you use it.

If you want a phone with 24 hour battery life, you're going to get a phone you can't customize as much and doesnt have as much speed. Most people want the cake and eat it too.

Carry a charger with you. You're telling me you cant plug it in for a few minutes when needed. We are in america, not afghanistan. Get a quick external charger, they are the size of a credit card and the one on VZW website says it will charge for up to 5 hours talk time. I understand battery life is an issue to some, but come on. A new thread every second why you hate the TB, why you wont get the TB, how can you improve battery life. oh wait, i just did it. Ha, well i love the phone and it will take a while to work out every issue, have some patience. i mean come on, how long did you wait for the phone to launch ;)
