Was under the impression that it is due to switch to 4g network and future upgrades to that. Current 3g is supposedly on a different type of CDMA then 4g will be so each sim card in 4g phone will "Lock" the phone and give you a "Device ID" without that card you will have a paperweight. So you can't take the SIM card and put it in another phone and "Unlock it" ect.
So it is mainly for security but it could also hold all your customer information. In theory on their network without the correct SIM card in YOUR phone you will have no access to make calls outside possibly 911. SIM should also have a specific frequency to work on the Verizon network to make it a Global type network sometimes you need permission to other frequencys to work. Why you see the tag on some phones to be "Unlocked" or "Global" which are similar but one was usually done by a hack and Global means it is intented to work well yeah you know Globally.
So in the sense you are the wording on 3g / 4g in past few years has been completely misused. So just look at it going forward as newer technology and different type of network then what we are currently on.

Interestingly enough, I was told yesterday from my Verizon rep that Tbolt will work in China. Because of this I am jumping ship from my Storm 2. I know it's not a world phone but it will work in 2 of the international places I travel each year. In the others, I'll activate my Storm 2 for the trip.
From what I've read I thought mostly Europe was against CDMA and not so much Asia and elsewhere. And I would assume most anywhere that has CDMA towers with the same frequency would be good to go. I don't travel outside the country much, so take it for what its worth. I think VZW's website and reps would be most help. And along the lines of the SIM, I would assume you need it for any kind of use of the phone using towers. It probably does not technically need it for 3G but I'm sure VZW wants to make sure you still have a SIM in and paying for LTE when it is eventually a premium tier.

Well, I guess if it was NEVER coming they would pull their ads. Other than showing it will still come out eventually, not sure this proves much.

I think at this point with another ad coming out I will be canceling my pre-order and will instead work with the Verizon rep I have. I need to make several account changes and for purposes of expediency and my sanity two trips isn't worth it. So off to BB tomorrow to see what happens.

I submitted it to AC as a news item to see if they can get him to post here, but I honestly felt it was worth letting others know the phone works just fine. Its ready, we are waiting on Executives who can't make a decision on pricing and launch dates. Not on a phone.
