Thunderbolt Specs: a look at what's inside (1.2 GHz Dual-core)

This will be able to run hunnycomb but why is everyone ragging this CPU like its crap its a great CPU. And if you want to say it's out of date then we can also say that about the tegra2 seeing that the tegra3 is already ready to ship but nvidia wants the tegra2 on the market before they start pushing the 3. And honestly give me an 8660 over a tegra2

The 8660 can't do LTE, unless Qualcomm rigged up a special version of it for Verizon.

Why is it so many tech oriented people keep throwing the term "future proof" around like its so believable?
Nothing in technology is future proof, everything on the market is old tech no matter how revolutionary it may seem.
Everyone knows what happens to "early adopters", you get an unlubed prostate exam by a guy like Shaq!
The new dual cores aren't gonna be that overwhelming,
an if there is a large enough gap this generation of snappy eats steroids like nobodys business Im sure it'll last untill the next round hits shelves in 2012

Just like the qsd8650 doesn't support wimax but the evo sure has it

Technically none of Qualcomm's chips support WiMax.

There's a problem with the 8660 though, and its been specifically remedied with the 8960; it is NOT capable of the multi-mode LTE/CDMA/EVDO requirements that Verizon has. Like I said, its possible that Qualcomm rigged something up, but I doubt it.

And as I said the qsd8650 doesn't Support that either but we have it. I have no doubt that they will be able to get the 8650&8660 operational with lte. But the question is how .

Well, as I posted above, they have the chipset already in the MDM 9600, so they could theoretically strip out the radios from the 8660 and use the 9600's.

Yes that's possible I don't know what they will do but can't wait to get my hands on one

I was under the impression that there would be 2 versions of Honeycomb: one optimized for tablets, one for phones.

And as I've said in other threads, I really doubt we'll see dual core devices drop until at least mid-year. If you think the Moto and Samsung LTE devices are gonna be released in the next couple of months with dual core, you're probably in for some disappointment.

hopefully i can post this url successfully. I have a storm1 and have had upgrade capabilities for a few months now. this device looks really neat and will be my first android device - looking forward to it. Either way for me, coming from a blackberry storm1 if it's not dual core i dont think i'll be so dissapointed - though i would really really really like it to be dual core :-)

"Qualcomm Announces 1.2GHz Processor and LTE Chip
--------------------------------------------------------
posted Today, 10:58 AM by Eric M. Zeman

Qualcomm today announced the MSM8655 SnapDragon processor and the MDM9600 Long Term Evolution modem module. The new SnapDragon processor runs at 1.2GHz and has advanced Adreno graphics support. The LTE module is fully backward compatible with Verizon's EVDO Rev. A/B 3G network. Together, these chips will form Qualcomm's flagship LTE modem and processor for 2011. According to Qualcomm, Verizon Wireless will introduce devices at CES this week with these chips inside them."

Yup, that's your processor right there, which actually fits right in line with what people have been expecting. Nice to finally see something official about this device instead of "leaks" or "my friend told me" crap. This info comes right from Qualcomms's website:

Qualcomm News and Events - Press Releases - Qualcomm?€™s Snapdragon Processor and LTE Modem Power Connectivity Devices on Verizon Wireless?€™ New 4G LTE Network

Yes, people will complain that other phones that will be debuted at CES will have dual core... but those aren't expected to drop until ~6 months after this phone does. You can't compare the two. Of course a phone that's released 6 months from now will be better than one released in 2 weeks, that's just the way computers and technology roll.

This will be the fastest processor yet in any Android device, so I'm with Green_Laser, I'm not too worried. But to each his own. If you want dual core, then just wait the 6 months and get a new dual-core phone then when Honeycomb is better written to utilize dual-core. Or get both phones when they drop!!

Also really happy to hear that this chip includes the "latest Adreno GPU " (Adreno 220, anybody?) :D

so according to the roadmap posted by kcoan3 earlier in the thread, you can see it here, the most bottom row and the second chip from the right:

MDM9600-LTE

anyone with experience with this chip? good/bad/ugly? this is the one for the thunderbolt right?

(or am i totally upside down and the thunder to get the Snapdragon MSM8655?)

So, if that chip is in fact for the thunderbolt, then whats the other phone getting the other chip (Snapdragon MSM8655) that qualcomm mentions ?

No, it isn't. The MD9600 is a data card chip. It is likely that it will have the same radios as whatever chip ends up in the TB, but it is not the thunderbolt's chip.

im confused. *scratching top of head*

so qualcomm article today wasnt reffering to the processor chip?

can you guys break it down for me, i feel i'm not on the same wavelength and really would like to understand this better.

The MDM9600 is not a processor chip, its a modem chip. It is what will provide the network connectivity. As I posited on a previous page, Qualcomm seems to be using that connectivity chip with a pre-existing Snapdragon (with its modem chip stripped out) for Verizon's early LTE phones. MDM = data card or modem. MSM = SoC.

so does this mean that with LTE and these chips we'll be able to receive txts or surf web while on phone call? or is this similar setup as in Dinc?
