I have a Verizon fold 3 sitting in my drawer that I still owe Verizon about 1600 on. I was considering trading that in towards an unlocked S22 for my wife. Will Verizon or Samsung have an issue with me trading in the fold 3 while I still owe money on it? Or can I just continue to pay for the fold until I decide to pay it off.

I've never had issues trading in Verizon phones not paid for they Samsung. Can't speak for Verizon.

Verizon requires it to be paid off so I was just gonna get an unlocked S22 and trade in to Samsung for the $700 credit making the S22 $150. I know it's not the most financially sound thing to do but at least the monthly payments on my fold will be going towards a phone for my wife that will actually be used.

Even if you paid the fold off and then refinanced the S22 you would still have payments. Of course you're going to be paying a premium for the S22, but if the fold isn't being used then I can blame you.

Alright, so just to clarify. If I trade my fold 3 in to Samsung while I still owe Verizon for it, Samsung won't reject my trade in and charge me full price for the S22? Sorry to be a PITA, but my wife will kill me if I have to pay 850 for her phone after dropping 2k on my s22u and galaxy tab s8 ultra.

Well Verizon will ask for the IMEI number of the trade in. So Verizon will likely reject the trade in since you're still paying for the fold.

They never rejected me.

That's true if you do the trade in thru Verizon. I think he's buying unlocked so the trade in should go thru Samsung and they handle it then

I thought you cant trade in financed device's? They have a way of knowing for sure through IMEI number

Up here you can do whatever you want since you're under contract. Afterall, you're required to pay off that Tab.

This is how I used to buy sealed phones until carriers introduced the Blacklist system. Basically, carriers want control of the used market!

OP what's wrong with the Fold3? Battery? That was my issue with the Flip3.

Battery was trash, couldn't type on the front screen and felt like I was carrying a brick on my pocket.

You have to pay it off.

I've done it a few times thru Samsung. Verizon or Samsung has never said a thing to me. I've had this discussion back when I did it and was told we can, Verizon treats it as a credit card type debt, there's no collateral.

I pay my bills so maybe I just slipped thru the cracks. They all went thru.

OP, exercise caution. As you see, you are getting mixed answers as I did. It worked for me, but can't promise it will for you.

The part that hurts is those phones are only worth around $900 in the use market per swappa prices. :(

Yep, the even worse part is my wife told me to wait for the S22 to come out and I didn't listen, as usual. So she got a nice "I told you so" out of the situation.

Hate to say it… but usually the better half is usually right.

I'm on TMobile and was able to give mine back. After Android 12 it was having issues and they took it back without issue. Only made 4 payments and was able to order s22 ultra. So you might want to look into that with Verizon
