I wanted this to replace my lipid when in a hotel but know that it can't do what I want.

I did mention to a securities guy at a large hotel chain and he was intrigued with the idea of hotels keeping them at the front desk and that they somehow would configure them for you. If you don't return them at checkout then you would get a nice service charge on your bill.
Something like that is possible no?

The other option of course is to travel with a router...

You could bridge the wifi from a laptop to the ethernet adapter, and plug the wan port of a router into the port on the laptop. Then after completing the TOS for the Hotel's wifi on the laptop, connect your smartphone and chromecast to your new hotspot.

This is a stupid crazy solution, but these are things that I think about... I should seek help.

I travel with a Zyxel MWR-211 mobile router, it supports wired WAN, USB mobile stick/tether, is an AP, and has its own battery. It's a little bigger than a wide mouse.

Have never had trouble using it but TOS is something to consider. Some specifically say you are not allowed to connect a router to their network.

I've got the Zyxel MWR-102. Great little travel router and I got it for $20.

I travel every other week, and use my CC all the time. I just setup ics [internet connection sharing] on my laptop. Now its my understanding not all laptop wifi adapters support this. This allows me to receive internet from hotel on one antenna on adapter, and retransmit my own network on the second antenna. Basically turning my laptop into a router. This way I can do hotel wifi login on my laptop, and it opens up net, for my wifi network I setup. I'll try n find a walkthrough for u guys.....

Nice, thanks! I didn't think my 3 yr old laptop was capable of such tricks, but it worked. I haven't tried it out with my Chromecast yet but if it works with the CC it would make unnecessary the need for a travel router.

All these ideas with virtual routers probably work but in the end that would take forever and even when you get it working it wouldn't be worth it by then

The virtual AP aka Soft AP method works, but often becomes problematic if you have to connect to a VPN, so not recommended for work laptops.

That's the way I am connecting. Use my 4g phone to broadcast a hotspot and a "dumb" wifi only tablet to control
the CC module. I read on a tricks site a while back that you can play stored videos from your phone to the CC
via a direct link somehow through Chrome. Might be on interest as it does not use internet then.

On any hotel network where you can see your Chromecast, I will be able to see your computer and do all sorts of naughty things to it, and I will be able to access your Chromcast and cast all sorts of naughty things to it. You don't want that. Probably.

You need one of these ZuniConnect Travel IV
When you get to the hotel:
1) Plug in an ethernet cable from your computer to the ZuniConnect
2) Your computer treats the ZuniConnect as another wifi adaptor. Use it to connect to the hotel's wifi and go through their username/password/hitOK login procedure.
3) You can now unplug your computer from the ZuniConnect and the ZuniConnect will function as a wifi router which you can connect to with your phone, tablet, Chromecast, whatever. The ZuniConnect will use the hotel's wifi to give you internet access.

Done. You now have your own, private wifi network that uses the hotel network for internet access. This is also really useful when you find a hotel that charges $10/night/device. Connect with the ZuniConnect and the hotel only charges you once even though you have laptop, phone, and tablet all connected.

I have never been to a hotel that charges per device, they charge per room. Per device is rare. And I doubt its worth nearly 2 times the cost of the Chromecast for the functionality it delivers, unless you need it for other reasons.

I recently used a method in my hotel that lets me use my Chromecast with my phone's WiFi hotspot, but without racking up massive data downloads. I pre-loaded my Nexus 7 tablet with several TV shows I wanted to watch. Then I turn on my phone WiFi hotspot and connect the Chromecast to it using the tablet to configure it. After that I use the Avia app to cast the local content to the TV. Works great and no data charges.

The weakness of this method is that you need two devices to make it work. The phone disables WiFi when the hotspot is on, so it can't configure the Chromecast.

Because you can't accept the terms of the hotels internet with the chrome cast you will not be ablt to use it.

I use the software Connectify which turns your pc into a wifi hotspot. Its available for free for basic hotspot usage.

I use the hoo too tripmate portable router. Connect the router by Ethernet cable or use it as a bridge. Works perfectly. I watch my Plex server/Netflix or Hulu when I'm traveling. The router is 20 or 30 bucks it also is a 6000 milliamp battery charger for your phone of you need it. Perfect little device

I'm trying this solution, but CC says it cannot connect to the internet.

I have an airport extreme connect by cable to the hotel network. All my stuff connects to the router, but I still need to log in on a home page for each mac address. So, I does not work with CC.

Buy a media bridge 15ft HDMI cable from Amazon for under 20 bucks. Hook it to your laptop and hotel TV. Done. NO CC NEEDED.
