trying to flash first rom on s3

Hi all im brand new to rooting had an iphone but got bored of it a friend gave me his old s3 (he just upgraded to s4) and it was already rooted. I am thinking i want to flash paranoid but am open to suggestions. Also to flash a new rom do i have to flash a new kernel everything on the phone is pretty much just stock minus the bloatware. Im just looking for something with tethering and customize colors,lights things like that that couldnt do with the iphone (never jailbroke didnt want to risk losing the phone) any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated

The first thing I would do is create a backup of your current ROM in recovery. http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...ing-into-recovery-mode-galaxy-s2-s3-tab2.html

Next, before doing any flashing, read all instructions. Make sure the files you download are for your device, and carrier. Flashing anything else will brick your phone. If you have any questions, do nothing and ask.

As for the kernel, ROMs come with one, so that is not much of a thing to be concerned about.

Once rooted you can get Light Manager from Play. Otherwise I am currently running SlimROM.
