Turned down iphone offer from T-mobile

T-Mobile called me yesterday to offer me a chance on the waiting list for the iphone 5 since I have been a long time customer. I was pretty happy to turn it down considering that I am a proud owner of the nexus 4. The phone rep was noticeably shocked when I told them that I wasn't interested and I told them that basically it is a huge downgrade. After this conversation it got me thinking that T-Mobile has the best selection with the most high end phones available but when they start selling the iphone, they are putting something on the market that is basically yesterdays news compared to phone like the nexus 4, the GS3, the Blackberry Z10 and the HTC 8x.

I pop into the local T-Mobile store today to take a peak and I couldn't help but notice how long and narrow the new iphone is and how much it looks like they simply stretched the previous iphone out. None the less, T-Mobile might see a surge of initial sales but once the initial surge wares off, I doubt that future sales will be anything fantastic.

Anyone else have any opinions on this considering that for 2012, Android garnered a commanding 69% market share world wide?

The truth is, the iPhone isn't going anywhere. It's been around for 7 years now and there is a new one coming out this summer. IT will again attract unheard if lines like no other phone can attract on release day. There were even people waiting in lines at T-Mobile stores on Friday to get this old iPhone.

By the way, I use a Nexus 4 and two iPhones, a 4S and a 3GS, both older iPhones than the 5.

What Network you on? Just curious.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see tMobilie in your profile.

True, unless Apple doesn't do a more innovative and extensive OS upgrade, which will result in them being left by the wayside as people realize that the true innovation is on Android devices. IOS has become so dated, so 2010, that people will simply get bored with it.

Judge iOS and the iPhone how we may, there are still a lot of people who prefer it: either for style or simplicity. I'm just happy that T-Mobile can offer it now; I know not having it has put them at a disadvantage and I hope they can generate some subscribers and revenue from it. With any luck, it might finally prompt Deutsche Telekom to invest some damn money in the network. Damn Germans and their fiscal austerity. >.>

I agree with the op that the iPhone screen only gets longer vertically, not diagonally like it should. It's actually ugly. I also don't see how the resolution (retina display) can get better by stretching it vertically.

But you're right, apple could dip the iPhone 5 in cow **** and people will still line up the block. I just don't get the hype every year.

iPhone 5 is 4G LTE ready out of the box. Nexus 4 isn't. I don't see how it would be a huge downgrade to move to a 4G LTE phone from one that isn't 4G LTE optimized. I know about the Band 4 hack, but the Nexus 4 isn't optimized for 4G LTE. It wasn't designed for it. I am sure the battery life of a phone that isn't optimized for 4G LTE is abysmal when you try to hack it to run on 4G LTE.

Good for you and glad you are enjoying your N4! I think it is good to have choices and glad for the T mobile folks who want an iphone with good speeds. I think the iphone 5 is a very capable device, especially if you like Apple gear, it just works...and I think the speed of android phones (Not necessarily Nexus phones) has made it difficult for Apple to keep up with with their product cycle. With that said, the iphone is an iconic brand and will always have a huge following. My college aged daughter would not even consider owning anything but an iphone to go with her Apple world.

What you have stated here is opinion. I disagree with this opinion as the Tmobile store I was at on Saturday to buy iPhones for my parents was quite busy with lots of other people buying iPhones as well.

The iPhone is here to stay and just because it means nothing to you doesn't mean that it means nothing to others.

After all these years, I still have the original picture in my iPhones photos that you are using as your avatar. It always made me laugh.

For me, LTE isn't a factor. If Google and the carriers activate it on the N4, great. If not, TMO's HSPA+ is plenty fast for my needs.

Some people choose the iPhone because they already have other Apple products and thus like having the iCloud ecosystem to link everything. I have an iMac, iPad and MacBook Air, but I went with the N4 because 1) of positive experiences with Android via the original HTC EVO 2) the iPhone was too small for my taste and 3) I can get the benefits of iCloud via Dropbox, Evernote, Google, etc.

You obviously haven't gone from an LTE phone to a Nexus 4. It sucks. I had the g
GS2 Skyrocket on AT&T and the speeds were great. Then the phone broke and the nexus was my best option not being able to upgrade. And going back to AT&T 3G is painful.

I think the main reason folks stay with Iphone is just because of the fad and marketing...People who need to have I this ot I that I now call Iwants lol. I've had many apple products over the years, had a Iphone and I no longer want anything with a I before it's name...Love my android phones and just got a Nexus 4...Best phone yet

No, I haven't. But I'm also not one of those people who gets all worked up about wanting Google Fiber or some other 1 Gbps service when I know that the speed is overkill for what I do, which includes videoconferencing and sharing large files.

Coming from a Razr Maxx on LTE there are times when the Nexus 4 actually feels faster. But that may have to do with the reception in my area. Plus the vast majority of people here (military, as I am as well) are on Verizon because it works everywhere. So I think the network here is really saturated.

It just feels like the antenna design is horrible on the nexus 4.

I went from using an iPhone on AT&T and an iPhone on verizon and getting 0.00-1.50Mbps if I were lucky. Then I got the Nexus 4 on T-Mobile and my god those speeds were incredible. I never knew I could get 17-21Mbps and even up to 26Mbps sometimes which is faster than my DSL at 16Mbps. I also use my iPhone 4S on T-Mobile and again, the speeds are incredible as what I had with AT&T and Verizon that I posted above. I'm just so happy to have these speeds after spending so many years on AT&T just to have an iPhone with non existent 3G speeds. I posted a screen cap in this forum about a month ago where it was going to take over 10 minutes to download one song in iTunes on AT&T in the middle of the night.

Wow that's amazing speeds. I can't get anymore than 5mb down on AT&T 3G where I live with my Nexus 4. And I've tried 3 different apn settings and the one I'm using gets 5.5mb down at best.
