I recently switched to the galaxy S4 from an iphone. So far I've liked the S4 but I don't know what the icon is in the screenshot I attached. Could someone tell me what it is and HOW to get rid of it?

How can that be? I constantly have it displayed, but my GPS is turned off. The only location service I have selected is the Wi-Fi location service.

It is the Emergency GPS indicator. Every phone since my old 199# LG flip phone had this indicator. I have yet to see it removed unless there is a custom ROM that will do it.

Hello Frank

I to have the very same icon on my s4 is it really an emergency service GPS icon. Is there some place on the net where this info can be found so it is verifiable? Thank you

I beg to differ. No custom rom here and it is not displayed. My gps icon is on the left and only on when pulling location information.

If you turn off EVERYTHING related to location it will go away - at least I was able to make it go away on my Verizon S4. But I ended up learning to live with it bc Google Now won't work without turning on Google Location Services, and that makes the icon come back on.

It is one of the gestures. I believe it's the one for auto scroll or the one where it will rotate screen based on how you are looking at the phone

I turned off "access to my location" under location services in the settings menu, and the "waves" to the right of the symbol went away. The "crosshairs" part is still there, though. I'd like to know how to remove it completely.

Verizon phones, since the beginning of I've seen, have had that service. It was discussed in another thread. It's an emergency location icon, what the intended use is for varies, from being stranded and having some sort of signal from a GPS satellite to just locating the phone. Some custom ROMs hide that symbol.

It is the E911 icon. You cannot turn it off.
