Unlocked phones and T-Mobiles new text messaging update

I currently have a T-Mobile note 4 and from what I've seen so far in leaks I don't think I have too much interest in the note 5. I am very interested in buying a moto x pure when they come out in September and was wondering if an unlocked phone like the moto x will be able to support the new messaging standard T-Mobile is releasing for its phones. Or would I have to buy a T-Mobile branded phone?

This is purely a guess, but my guess would be its something that branded phones will get first, then it may open up to others down the road.

I'm also waiting to see if T-Mobile will support this and other T-Mobile features like wifi calling on devices like the new Moto G, Moto X Style (Pure Edition), and OnePlus Two.
