unrEVOked!

definitely rooting right away.

remember folks: rooting and customr roms are seperate. you can root and not install any custom software to your phone.

Nevermind on the guide. You just drag and drop the file after mounting the sd card to a computer... You can also alternatively download it straight to the phone using the phones browser and then use a file manager to put it into the correct part of the sd card. By default files are downloaded to the download folder of the sd card (/sdcard/download/) but it needs to be in the root folder for this to work (/sdcard/). reboot into recovery (hold down Volume down and press power) and follow prompts and you're good.

Yea this is just wayyyyy too easy... haha

Question..when 2.2 comes (shortly...fingers crossed), what happens if one has rooted? Are you still rooted, just running 2.2? Does it revert to stock 2.2? Do you have to recover to stock 2.1 then update to 2.2, then root again? I am in the optimistic camp that 2.2 is coming in a month or two, so I would probably wait until that happens, but depending on procedure may do it earlier.

Thanks for any light one could shed.

just don't install the update directly from sprint and wait for a developer to make a custom rom off of the 2.2 update from sprint.

Sorry for my noob question, but I want to be sure.

By reading the guide, it says that by rooting it will

"- wipe all of your data so brace for that. backup or what not"

What exactly does it mean??? what kind of "data" will be wiped?

all your settings will revert back to stock. so as if the phone was fresh out of the box. google will sync your contacts back with your phone, but all your personal settings will have to be re-done.

what would happen if you did install the sprint update directly? just wondering...

Can anyone explain what the recovery image is? Is it like WebOS doctor, where if I mess up I can wipe my phone clean and start over?

I am still new to Android and would love to root my phone.

So RUFFLEZ, i can do all of this without my computer, if I have those 2 files on a SD card? What about the second file? the Recovery file. What is it for? Is it just for backing up the system and that sort of thing? Sorry, Noob to Android \ Rooting.

nah, the recovery requires a computer to flash it. But to just be rooted, you are good to go with just the zip. The recovery image allows you to backup the phone, flash a custom ROM, partition the sd card for apps2sd, enables USB-Mass Storage when the phone can't be booted.

To flash the recovery image, the SDK needs to be installed and you need to fire up terminal. Unzip the recovery onto your desktop:
Windows Only
Code:
cd c:\android-sdk-windows\tools
adb reboot recovery

Once it is in recovery, double click the evorecovery.bat file and it should automatically install for you. I will take a peak at it and see if I can get a write up for you non-windows users in just a bit.

I imagine it may close the exploit that was used for root, and you may never be able to root again, until the xda developers come out with a new exploit. You never know what Sprint/HTC may do once they find out how the developers got through with 2.1

Just one of the possibility. So if you root now, just don't install the update from Sprint, and wait for developers to customize the 2.2 rom, and then update it manually.

Thanks Rufflez. This means I can root tomorrow, and then when I get back to my computer on Monday I can load the recovery and back up my system. Thanks for the wonderful help.

So yeah, after taking a look at the file... if you have a mac, just double click the ./recovery-mac.sh, if you have linux, just double click the ./recovery-linux.sh and it will accomplish the same thing as the Windows. Make sure you run the file in terminal if you get prompted. Its all setup to work as easily as possible.
You'll still need the sdk to remove files. Unfortunately, I can't test it out for you guys... no evo

So if i use this root method after I pick up my phone tomorrow I will still be able to use SenseUI, right?

It's essentially the exact same package as what HTC/Sprint provides, only with superuser access to open up a bunch of options, right?

RIGHT?!

;)

Are these guys different from the XDA people that just posted up the directions?

You aren't getting rid of sense. You're not flashing a ROM by just rooting. You will lose sense if you flash a not-entirely-working Froyo ROM. Everything will be as is the moment you pick it up... just with read/write permissions to the /system/ file.

Another question.....after rooting.....will my phone still know my phone number? If I lose that, how does one go about re-programming it in?

Okay, HTC has annouced an update over the air soon for the SD card issue. How will this affect me if I root my phone tomorrow? Should I now hold off? thoughts?
