Um, you know it's been pulled right? You're not going to get it OTA. It wasn't supposed to be sent out at all. Once they realized the mistake they pulled it. It'll be another few weeks before it comes out...and it may not be 901. It could be but it might not be.

So, Dhacker,

I'm on the rooted 5.8.894 version, should I/could I update to 901?

You can't yet. However there is finally a method that truly appears to work for those of us off the beaten path. It's super dangerous, though, and a lot of us are waiting for further instructions before we attempt it. Basically it adds a step to what I linked to earlier in this thread. It uses DD to push the boot image from stock 886. That allows the 5.5.893 update to run and then you're back on the upgrade path. I will be trying it later. The person reporting success is someone that has quite a bit of experience and is now on 901. Once we get confirmation of the exact steps to take I'm going to try it and see what happens.

I'm just trying to get my phone back on ANY path at this point. I've completely borked it so far. I have people helping me but this process is NOT for the faint of heart! At the moment my phone won't boot at all and the OTA update fails.

I'm in same position as you (besides my phone is still working). Sorry your phone isn't working correctly, I'm assuming you're trying the 'super dangerous' steps you stated a few post above. let us know if you get it working correctly and how, I'd love to get off the 5.7.893 and back on upgrade path...maybe 5.9.901 since it will be supported, but for now i'm focusing on getting back on upgrade path..I gotta keep this phone for a while lol.

Yea, I tried the super dangerous approach that seems to work for a lot of people. The update applies just fine but I get a boot error. And it will not boot now no matter what I do. So basically at this very moment in time I've bricked my phone. As in I can't even get back to where I was before I tried all this.

Man, sorry to hear that. I know you have been working to get back on the update path without resorting to filing a claim on the phone. Hope this works out for you.

Me too but it looks like I'm fairly well screwed now. But at least we think we know how I got to this situation so others can avoid it. Doesn't do much for me I'm afraid.

Yea, so, I did indeed brick my phone. VZW was very nice and are giving me a new one. I did explain what happened. The looked at the error screen I was getting, popped the battery, tried it again, and started typing up the request for a replacement before I even knew what was happening. I was preparing myself to have to buy a new phone before I went in. I wasn't looking for them to give me a replacement, but, I'm not unhappy that they're doing so. Personally, I consider this a lesson learned. Once I get the new phone, I'm not touching another "leaked update" again. If it's something that a bunch of people had pushed to their phone OTA, that's one thing, but, anything not pushed to a phone OTA, forget it. I'll root my new one, flip a coin on whether I update to 901 or wait, and be wiser for the experience going forward. When the "unofficial" ICS leaks happen, and we can all be sure they will, I beg people to consider ignoring them. I really don't want what happened to me to happen to anyone else.

SamuriHL - I am new to Android and would like to know more. Since you will not be using any leaked updates why are you going to root the new phone? What is the advantage to rooting a phone?

For me, plenty. I have some apps that I use that require root. I like being able to make nandroid backups. I may even consider some custom roms once I get back to normal. The leaked updates, however, change your boot image, which with a locked bootloader is bad. That takes you off the upgrade path as we all found out. And getting back....not a simple chore. Root is a much easier pill to swallow. You can always unroot (more or less) if you wanted to. Once you flash a new boot image from a leaked, signed update, you're potentially in trouble. As I said, for me, lesson learned. Locked bootloaders SUCK.

I read the last few pages of rootzwiki and got the impression you might have fixed your phone...is this right or are you still sure it's impossible to revert the phone? Just wanted to check before I completely give up on it or if I wanna go through with the steps.

thanks

As long as you follow the latest steps you may be ok. Let FenixJr do his first and see how it goes. And post the OTA 5.5.893 update. I have definitely NOT fixed my phone. VZW is sending me a new one. Mine's completely bricked at this point.

Glad to hear it worked out for you. I like that you were up front with Verizon and they took care of a good customer. Shows not being an ass does have it's benefits.

I felt really bad when I realized they were warrantying it. I do have TEC, but, even so, this was my own stupidity and I shouldn't be doing a warranty on it. But that's how they decided to handle it, so, major props to VZW on this. And a major lesson learned from me. No more leaked updates. Root, maybe some roms, but OTA updates only. Stupid locked bootloader.

P.S. We finally figured out what truly borked my phone. I used the wrong 5.5.893 update file. I accidentally copied a 999 file I found and was looking at instead of the proper update file. Once I flashed that 999 thing it was game over for this phone. So, if anyone wants to get back to the update path from any leaked update, there's a thread now that shows how to do it. Several people have been successful.

Hey guys, I'm an infrequent poster but lurk alot. SamuriHL, I'm sorry for what happened to your phone but glad you'll be back in business soon. I just received a replacement bionic for my original which took a header into some parking lot asphalt - it may be gorilla glass but it's not shatterproof! Anyway, I noticed my new phone is a HWB (inside battery compartment) while original was HWA. I remember reading somewhere on the forums about that (slightly tweaked or improved hardware or something, or is it irrelevant?). I also instantly got the 5.5.893 update, and I then manually installed the 5.9.901 update. This phone is a whole new animal compared to my old one, which I had upped to 5.7.893. IMO it's no comparison - battery life, 4GLte signal strength, overall 'speediness' of the system - I have yet to find anything to complain about with this one. Old phone was good, but now this one is slammin'! Thought I'd share my two cents worth...

I'm definitely looking forward to getting my new phone. Then I can put all this ugliness behind me. However, for those still off the beaten path, they've really made it fairly idiot proof (apparently they hadn't met me yet :D) for those that want to get back on the path. It's working in every case and they made it step by step. Follow it, get back on the upgrade path, and leave the leaks alone. Especially now that we're losing devs on the bionic left and right.

LOL! Did not know that... Guess I can quit checking for the update then, eh?

Thank you!
