Update 5.9.901?

No. There is never a way to go back. Once a kernel is updated, you're stuck with it until the next update. That being said, since this is being pushed out to some people OTA, there will be a path going forward as it's going to have to be considered "official".

Ok, that is in line with my thinking. I have very frequent data drops regardless of geographic location (east coast, west coast, name it). VZW tried a refurb phone which was even worse so I'm thinking of just doing the update manually as there seems to be very little downside, unless I'm misinterpreting something.

If you manually apply 5.9.901 now instead of waiting for OTA, is there any way to revert back to 893 in case 901 isn't on the dev path going forward?

I've heard and I believe that because it was an official update put out by motorola, by mistake or what have you, you will still be on the upgrade path. As anything moto subsequently releases has to be OK for those who were mistakenly updated to 901 to use. Thusly, if you update to said OTA you must still be fine and on the upgrade path like the others.

Still holding out for someone to try out the any hdmi webtop mod.

now that data is back working again, ill say that my bionic has been locked on LTE all night... Has not dropped to 3g once except inside a building i was in... that never happened before... i still have issues if i manually switch from lte to 3g... signal drops and requires "airplane mode" reset..

its weird, because it seems to handle switching to 3g on its own.. just hates when i manually do it..

however, the battery life seems much improved!! so if i can leave the phone is LTE all day and let it manage my signals w/o destroying my battery, i cannot complain.. tomorrow is hopefully the first real test if V's network is playing nice tomorrow.

overall seems faster, snappier... its closer to perfect than i thought we would ever see.. im glad i flashed this baby... so far so good...

Nobody panic just yet.

We don't know for sure that it wont be pushed, be patient everybody, entirely possible it will be pushed after the holidays, but yes if they do push another update they will almost certainly also push an update that updates this to whatever that ends up being.

I'm willing to bet that the kernal and radio will stay the same. I bet the only changes will be tweaking the ui. I love this update.

Not necessarily helpful though. What we found out with the 5.7.893 upgrade is that even though the kernel is the same, the boot image isn't. So we have the same kernel, but, it doesn't help us with other updates. :(

yeah, this update shreds so far... i used to roll in 3g all the time and turn on lte when i needed/wanted it... left on lte all day today... still have tons of battery to spare.. and it never dropped lte to my knowledge all day... holds a signal much better

Very nice. I'm really wishing I could install it at this point. I do not like being off the upgrade path. Someone in another forum went into their VZW store, told them EXACTLY what they did (as in didn't hide that they installed a leaked update and was now screwed), and the rep tried to reflash the phone several different ways and failed. In their case, however, they are being shipped a new phone. So, I don't know. I don't feel right about having to have them ship me a new phone, but, on the same token, it's not like they did anything wrong to get one. They were honest, and that's how VZW decided to rectify the problem. I'm not saying everyone should jump over to their VZW store to get a replacement phone. However, if you're desperate, you could tell them your sob story and see what happens. Getting back on the upgrade path certainly has appeal.

Thanks for all the info guys. I just loaded the update manually, and now it's time to see how it runs.

i would give it some time, it is very probably that a full RUU will leak for the official update whatever it ends up being and you will be able to flash that and upgrade. If, in the meantime the device has any problems then consider going in and asking them to either re-flash the phone or replace it.

I personally downloaded the new file and am waiting to see what happens and if this one gets fully pushed or not before I flash. The phone seems to be working well for me on this first update and i don't want to screw it up. If it starts to go south I will reconsider :)

Yea, I suppose. It still loses data every once in a while even on 5.7.893. It's not as bad as when it was 886 by any means. So, it would appear Moto phones have been locked since the OG Droid....is there a precedence for this situation we find ourselves in now? Meaning, a couple things. First, has there ever been leaked, signed updates before for locked phones? And second, a release of a full RUU for a locked phone? I realize they don't do SBF anymore, but the FXZ doesn't cut it as it doesn't appear to mess with the boot loader at all.

An RUU is the complete ROM and by definition are signed, and yes they leak for other phones all the time I have installed at least three of them on the Thunderbolt. The drawback is that they wipe the phone but that's a small price to pay to be running official software and get official updates again.

I did some research. RUU is what HTC alone uses. Motorola was using SBF (man that would be nice right about now) and are now using FXZ. But the FXZ doesn't appear able to touch the kernel or radio in 886 version we have. So, not necessarily the best of options unless we get a FULL FXZ that can be applied over any boot image.

The community takes care of their own. I have confidence whomever has been leaking these updates will also leak whatever is needed to get you all back on the update path.

Some other ideas are in play as we speak. So far I've not been successful, but, one person has reported to get OFF of 5.7.893 and back to 5.5.893 OTA. It's not a fun process, and has failed for me on every attempt, but, it's something.

Hi SamuriHL, Thanks for your persistence in the 5.7.893 upgrade issue. You refer to the one person and a method they have, could you direct me to it please, I'm willing to give it a try.
Thanks

PLEASE make sure you know what you're doing before trying this. It's very dangerous. Backup your current system first. Make SURE you have all the updates you need on the sd card before you do this. Not just the ones in that post, but, also the 5.7.893 full signed update to make sure you can get back.

Good luck, and please post if it works for you.

Thanks appreciate the quick reply. Whats your status now? Is your phone operable at all?

My status is highly annoyed with this phone and locked bootloaders. And quite frankly, sick of dealing with this crap. I've wasted another night on pure nonsense. It's not going to work. It will fail for you. So I wouldn't bother. You're more than welcome to try it but the simple fact is this post:

Quite simply? We're freaking SCREWED.
