  • While Holding press power button
  • Use volume down button to scroll down to "Recovery"

Are we still talking about 5.9.901, that the thread is named after?

just did the update following the steps richt posted.

that first boot after doing the update had me pretty nervous, seemed like it hung on the "bionic eye" screen much longer then normal.

appear to still have root. I am forever rooted, using the tool.

DO NOT apply any custom ROMS if you have taken the .901 OTA./ Reports from others indicate that the older files in the custom ROMs available brick the handsets.

Yes we are still talking about 5.9.901. It seems to be an update to add some APPS, Fix some bugs with data and radio. I have no idea why it didn't get a version number update. The links you find in this thread will get you the right file and update you to 5.9.901 despite what the file name says.

I noticed that too... It seems to boot normally now, its just that first one. And I have an extra bar now on 4Glte so that's good. Still going through everything to see if I notice any changes. So far only the V-Market and The emergency message is all I found.

Re: Update 5.9.901???

Ok, I guess I missed a spot in that spot on.... I I have a rootedforever Bionic that I installed the OTA update 5.5.893. I downloaded the Blur_Version.5.5.893.XT875.Verizon.en.US.zip file and placed it in the Root directory of my SD card (in root explorer there is SDcard that is 7 gigs and SDcard-Ext that is 29 Gigs I used SDCard-Ext) Then I powered off the phone and then held Volume up and down and powered on. I used the volume down to scroll to the recovery item and selected it with volume up. I get the Moto Duel core graphic, then the Android standing next to a Triangle with an ! in it and that is where it sits forever.

So what did I miss?

Sorry, the step by step instructions were from http://www.droid-life.com/2011/12/20/droid-bionic-receiving-mysterious-5-9-901-update
They did include what to do after the triangle:
1. Download the file from above and drop it on the root of your SD card (not internal storage).
2. Reboot into stock recovery (adb reboot recovery).
3. When the robot appears, press both volume keys in at the same time.
4. Select ?apply update from sdcard? using the volume keys, then the power switch to initiate it.
5. Choose the file that you downloaded above and let it load.

The file I downloaded from Droid Life is a zipped folder. Do I need to decompress this before I place it on the sd card or do I leave it zipped? Thanks in advance.

Do not unzip it. Just put it on the sdcard.

Has anyone gotten this OTA yet?

People over at Droid Forums said some have received the OTA for 901 but it has been pulled by Moto. I applied it manually so I am stuck there now, but it seems to be working ok so far. Not sure if Moto will re-release the same OTA or something different.

Yea, it was an accidental release and wasn't scheduled to go out for another 2-3 weeks. So, anyone who hasn't seen it OTA isn't likely to for a few weeks at this point. And who knows what they'll end up officially releasing....this or maybe something newer. Good times.

Also they are saying that none of the 893 roms will work with the 901 update. So if you have 901 don't flash any roms for now.

Ditto on the bloatware but I am seeing the 3g and 4g hold much better than before (my work location and home are both weak signal areas). I am able to browse the web and use facebook where I previous got a message that I had no connection. If this improved reception wasn't a one-day fluke I will be very pleased because my previous phone (DroidX) could pull a signal in this same location.

There you guys have it, the mysterious update revealed. It?s good to see the Bionic receiving some much needed love with two major updates in the past few weeks. If you haven?t received the update yet, you can check to see if it?s available by going from the home screen, tapping Menu, then Settings/About Phone/System Updates. Have you received these updates yet? If so, is your phone more usable?

If you manually apply 5.9.901 now instead of waiting for OTA, is there any way to revert back to 893 in case 901 isn't on the dev path going forward?

No. There is never a way to go back. Once a kernel is updated, you're stuck with it until the next update. That being said, since this is being pushed out to some people OTA, there will be a path going forward as it's going to have to be considered "official".
