I have never given out my ss number to get an upgrade. In fact, I talked to someone at Sprint after the "new" Sams Club cell kiosk demanded my and my husband's ss number to get my upgrade. The Sprint rep said they've moved away from using ss numbers, and they don't even keep full ss numbers on file. They used to ask for the last 4 digits as a way of confirming identity, but that's now done by giving your PIN. When I upgraded my phone in the past, all I was asked for was my name, call number, and PIN. I just upgraded online for the first time, via Amazon, and they did not ask for my social security number. If Sprint doesn't even use this any more, I'm not sure why external resellers are asking for it. Perhaps it's a generic form for all providers, and some providers may still require that. Since Sprint doesn't, I'd rather deal with a merchant who asks only for the information Sprint actually needs to process my upgrade.
