Using car dock vertically

I have my car dock mounted vertically on a custom mounting plate. My first issue was that the car dock software only works in landscape. Since I don't want to use the car dock app anyway I use the app 'Dock Nothingness' to diable it. Unfortunately the display remains in landscape mode. I tried turning off automatic screen rotation and it worked initially but now it doesn't anymore???? Is there any way to get around this? (other than removing the magnet in the dock)
