Using Hangouts for SMS/Texts/MMS is really going to take some getting used to

Have you found a way to save photos or videos that you receive via SMS/MMS in Hangouts?

You click on the MMS sent to you to open it and there's an overflow menu button in the top right corner. That'll bring down the option to save.

I really hope Google adds some quick reply options for hangout to the notification blind. I was spoiled on AOKP with my S3 where I could reply straight from the notification. Even pop-up notifications seemed annoying after the custom ROM's added that.

That is one of my main points in a messaging app too. I feel that is one of the most used features I used when I had the aosp messaging app. I don't see why all these texting apps don't include it. I guess people don't really realize how great it is unless they've flashed a ROM that had the capability.

It is anoying, that you can't do a line change if you understand. Like a ENTER button on a keyboard of course!

That annoys me on my Note 3..

So, I downloaded the apk from Android Police and sideloaded it onto my S4 last night...so far so good.

One question for those that have already been using this for a few days...now that the new version supports animated GIF files to be sent in Hangouts messages, what happens if I send one to someone who hasn't updated yet? My assumption would be that they wouldn't see the animation (or maybe wouldn't get the file at all?), but I was curious if anyone had tried it yet...?

when is the update coming to the play store for SMS/MMS support?

It, as well as updates to many of the other Google Apps should start rolling out any day now, but as with most Google-branded items, it will be a staggered rollout, meaning some folks will see it pop up before others.

You can always sideload the apk from the Nexus 5 ahead of time, it's available here:
APK Download: Hangouts 2.0 With Support For SMS, Animated GIFs, Location Sharing, Moods, And Statuses

Just be sure to read the caveat about certain functions that cause the app to crash. None of them were really a concern for me, but my guess is that Google is working to fix those bugs before they push it out to the non-Nexus 5 public.

Are you sure? I just tested and I'm able to carriage return on my S4 (in both SMS and Hangouts messages)...I'm using Swiftkey keyboard, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference?

I need to find an app that works cross platform for someone with an iPod touch and me (nexus 5). What is the best App?

Um...Hangouts? I use Hangouts with my iOS friends all the time. They'll have to install the app and sign in with a Google Account, but after that it works great.

I tried this and they aren't getting the messages. They sign in with their email on their iPod touch but the messages get emailed to them and don't show up in hangouts.

Textra is the best! Simple and easy but very smooth and reliable.

just set up my Nexus 5 - love it.

BUT anybody else find Hangouts for SMS/Texts/MMS a little clunky??????

IMO GoSMS Pro and Handcent both look CARTOONISH.

can i please just have a basic professional TEXT app?

or am i missing something?????????

i used hangouts for google chat previously...so its caused zero issues from the old text app. feels similar to me overall.

My issue with Hangouts SMS is that I couldn't get it to work. Called AT&T last night about it; settings were fine, but the test SMS never arrived. I downloaded Textra, which works beautifully, but I'd like to get Hangouts to work, too. Any suggestions?

Whether it's a bit clunky or not, group texting is really screwed for many since there's no option to send multiple sms messages, and mms coat money.

Back to handcent.
