Using Hangouts for SMS/Texts/MMS is really going to take some getting used to

i don't think a paper clip will work on the Nexus 5. she has a tiny hole! (which i like BTW).

I use a sewing needle or even a pin that comes with my new shirts for my old iphone where a paper clip is too thick.

Is there any way in hangouts when sending a text message to multiple recipients in one message as individual messages rather than a group message where everyone sees other's responses? The old text messaging app gave you this option.

I am able to send and receive MMS using Hangouts. I also don't plan to try using texting apps as I've had more trouble with them than they're worth.

I think there needs to be a drop down to select between SMS/MMS, Hangouts, and all. It's a bit tough to send a text at first.

no i meant 8SMS + Nexus 5 + MMS = no go.

I actually plan on using BBM. I've got a few friends/family to agree to sign up.

I know, I'm a loser. :'(

You're not a loser, it's just that BBM is probably a day late and a dollar short with their cross-platform offering. A few years ago, if RIM had released BBM for Android and iPhone, it probably would have blown up, as a lot of folks were still using BBs then, and even those that had switched still loved the platform and had friends using it. Now, however...that's not really case for most of us.

Unless I'm really missing something, there's not really anything that BBM offers that Hangouts doesn't (unless you have friends that are still using *actual* BlackBerries as their primary device), and Hangouts already comes installed on Android devices and everyone with a Google Account already has access. There's no awkward, "hey can you install this app so I can chat with you" that needs to happen, especially once everyone has the updated SMS-enable Hangouts app, because everyone will already have it. With Hangouts, you can just lookup your existing contacts by gmail address, and if they're available to send a message you're good to go...otherwise you send a standard SMS text. With BBM, as you mentioned, you have to get your friends/family to install the app, then register for an account to get a PIN.

When you add to that the fact that BBM only works on ONE device at a time, compared to Hangouts which works across all of your devices, just seems like a no-brainer to me.

If you can get your friends to use BBM, more power to you, but I have a feeling if you stick with Android you'll probably end up using Hangouts as well anyway.

The only thing I want is one app that handles letting me talk to anyone I want, regardless of what OS they are on or what device I'm on. Right now, the closest thing to that is Hangouts (can't yet text directly from a Windows machine, but Moto lets me do that through connect, so not whining).

Does this mean that a Google Voice user can now send MMS via Hangouts?

No...but it's coming...

The primary thing with sending SMS from other devices is that in order to send *FROM YOUR PHONE NUMBER* it has to go through your carrier, so Google has to work with them to make that functionality work, it's not just as easy as simply flipping a switch to enable the feature. I guarantee that Google wants to be able to provide this service and they are working on it, but I'm also glad they're not waiting for that to work before enabling SMS-integration on the mobile app.

*As a side note, for an iOS users here, does this functionality exist with iMessage? i.e. can you send SMS/MMS message from a desktop iMessage client (does that even exist?) or from a wifi only device like an iPad (better example). I realize that iMessage itself works from a wifi-only iPad, but can you send and receive messages using the SMS protocol on it? I'm asking because I honestly don't know. As stated above, I know that it possible to it (send SMS from a non-cellular device), but that Apple would have had to worked with the carriers to make that functionality possible, based on what I've lead to understand.

Have you found a way to save photos or videos that you receive via SMS/MMS in Hangouts?
