Using Hangouts for SMS/Texts/MMS is really going to take some getting used to

maybe it's a Sprint issue. i'm on AT&T with no problem and i think the other guy who had problems had Sprint too.

It must be, but not sure why. Using the stock messaging app on my old LG Optimus S on sprint would let me compose SMS over 160 and split it into smaller chunks like your Nexus 5 is.

are you sure? i can go over 160. it just adds a (2) next to it just like the old Jelly Bean SMS App. i'm with AT&T.

It's probably being broken up on the carrier end. Some carriers don't support that and the app needs to do it.

yep my Sprint G-Nex could do it and i think my OG EVO could do it too. i really don't miss Sprint. AT&T GoPhone is cheaper, better coverage, and much faster!

it worked on my old Sprint G-Nex. although i will say i constantly had issues sending MMS and sometimes SMS on Sprint. they would get stuck in "Sending" and never send. that's just one of the many, many reasons i ported to AT&T GoPhone.

And the messaging app you used most likely supported auto splitting the messages where the hangouts app does not.

If you look at apps such as handcent you'll find in the settings there are options to enable the auto splitting for CDMA networks.

Google concatenated SMS for more explanation.

Some networks support it, for other networks the app itself has to support splitting to send over 160 characters in a single message

Hangouts splits the messages on my Nexus 5. so let's summarize -

1. Sprint supported split MMS messages in the past.
2. Hangouts supports split MMS messages (at minimum on AT&T).

ergo - i don't know why you are definitively concluding that Hangouts and/or Sprint doesn't support split SMS messages.

I'm saying for certain networks the hangout app requires support to send messages longer than 160 characters. It appears it does not.

You are on at&t that has support for concatenated SMS.

in hangout account settings, im trying to figure out how/why its showing a half a dozen old phone numbers for me (from old or test phones) under "Phone number confirmed" section. its driving me crazy and it doesnt seem like there's any way to remove any of them...

I had the same issue and tacked it down to my Gmail account on my laptop's contact list. On my Gmail account on my laptop I had my wife's email with our home number and I spent two hours in my N5 changing her phone number to the correct cell phone number only to see it flip back the the home phone number. Finally I got so frustrated that I deleted her contact record on my new N5 only to see her contact record Sync'ed back from the Google Cloud in 10 seconds on my N5. All our Google records are connected.

OK :)

my guess is that the Nexus 5 (which is first and foremost a GSM/LTE phone) had to be kludged onto the Sprint system with kludge settings and a kludge SIM card and because of that it lost some (minor) features (like split SMS) along the way when on that network - even though other phones on Sprint have those features and even though the Nexus 5 on other networks have those features. this could be temporary or it could be permanent. this is my theory.

just set up my Nexus 5 - love it.

BUT anybody else find Hangouts for SMS/Texts/MMS a little clunky??????

IMO GoSMS Pro and Handcent both look CARTOONISH.

can i please just have a basic professional TEXT app?

or am i missing something?????????

Being a former webOS user, I'm actually glad to see some message integration finally make it to stock Android.

I'm still waiting on my N5, and I'm still using DInc2 on VZW (so y'all know how out of date I am) - when I finally get everything ported into the N5 - very few of my contacts are in my Google accts & I want to keep it that way - I don't want all the businesses/work stuff cluttering up my Gmail accts (not to mention there's some crossover in my multiple Google accts) - if I use Hangouts, will everyone not in a GAcct have to be manually entered to have the connections save? Will using hangouts automatically connect everyone into Google? Will the people/contacts in my different GAccts blage together & make a giant mess? If I use hangouts & I'm sending to someone that doesn't have it, how does it show up? Their default msg app?

one thing i really hate about Hangouts is the "Suggested People" thrown in your face. i have no idea why Google thinks they can know who i want to text. out of my almost 3,000 contacts Google thinks they know who i want to text? and the suggestions are really awful - they're not even people who i ever texted! at least use "Frequently Contacted" as your algorithm. NO - Google is suggesting people that are in my contacts that i have never even texted ever!!! it almost seems random! Google is smart but not very smart in this case! and i don't want random people being pushed in front of me when i'm trying to text close friends/family/whoever. it's confusing and distracting and always makes me constantly worried that i'm going to text the wrong person! they really need to change this to "Frequently Contact" rather than "Suggested People". anyone else agree????????

Have you used it for hangouts much or just SMS? I've used the hangouts app for quite a while and I do have a "people you hangout with" above the suggestions for easy picking. Maybe they havent implemented that for SMS yet? Or it'll take a bit to build that list based on your usage?
