Verizon catching on to tethering apps?

If they take away the Unlimited and give us just 2GB per month then they should give us tethering for free!!!!!! Its our 2GB so let us use it however we please! That is why I root. They are nickle and diming all of us. Not fair so why should we be!!!

Verizon's pricing structure is already beginning to backfire...

Verizon rolls out $20 entry-level smartphone data plan - Washington Business Journal

Now the company has announced that starting Thursday, new and existing Verizon Wireless customers in D.C., Maryland and Virginia will be able to add a 300 megabyte data plan to their smartphone or basic phone for just $20 monthly access when added to a voice plan. It's a promotion that will run through Sept 30. Verizon (NYSE: VZ) said the new data plan is in line with its strategy to attract more wireless customers to try the smartphones. Verizon believes that some customers are not transitioning to smartphones because they’re afraid of the higher cost of both the phone and the data plans.

If you have a smartphone, who the hell would only use 300mb?

Not many. I believe Verizon is panicking a little bit because the number of people signing up since they ended unlimited has dropped off, so they're going to try this to sucker people into buying the phones.

who knows, I don't see why though, AT&T doesn't have unlimited anymore either. Of course sprint and t-mobile still do. In fact I've been thinking about switching to t-mobile because right now I could get unlimited data/talk/ blah blah blah on both my phone and my tablet for the same price I spend on just my phone right now. I'll only do it though if Verizon really does come through with blocking rooted tethering.

On a recent trip I used my tethering (Open Garden on HTC THunderbolt) with no ill effect or issue. so. . .it worked for me.

It was just a matter of time. If you have unlimited data, you can add unlimited hotspot for 30 bucks a month.

I called vzw and they told me I would have to switch from unlimited data to a data plan if I want to do wireless hotspot.

Why don't you do it from My Verizon on your computer? I logged into my account and it's listed as a feature.

Wireless Internet Access
Select any of the following features:
4G Mobile Hotspot
Use your Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Smartphone to get online access and share your data allowance with multiple Wi-Fi-enable devices.
Tell me more $30.00 /mo
$24.00 /mo
(20.0% off)

Yes but if you choose it your data plan automatically changes from unlimited data to the typical data plan rip off.

Really? It shouldn't, but even if it does, oh well. Call Verizon and speak to someone who knows a thing or two. :)

What are you guys using to teether ? My plan is to root buy a tab undecided yet and hopefully wireless teether if possible. I only need to stream a few games on Sunday ticket to go while I'm away from home. I don't need nor can I afford to pay for a hotspot as I have four lines on my bill. What do you guys suggest?

Why, do you work there? Otherwise I told you I called them already and they told me they do not allow any kind of tethering or wireless hotspot without a data plan. Perhaps if I signed up back when it was free they would have given me the 30 dollar a month deal and allowed me to keep unlimited data but not now.

What I really wanted to do was see what it would cost to sign up for one day only. Vzw rep explained cost would be low but I would permanantly lose unlimited data plan.

the rep you talked was wrong. call another one. ask for the 30 unlimited.

Since I only want to do it now and then for a day at a time it isn't worth the risk. I'd be afraid the same mistake would be made by billing dept and I'd be stuck with a data plan. I'd go way over the limit on the phone alone let alone when connected to computer.

That pesky little company with the funny theme song now offers Android smart phones for a song along with unlimited data and talk time. Their wireless zone is small but a lot of city folks are switching to their plans. Also no contract so you can always quit or upgrade. I think u might have to go out for a date with one of them though.

I think THAT plan is what worries VZW.

Basically it sounds like you made up your mind to go the none pay way so I really don't see the reason to carry this on longer,if you just want to have someone to tell you to use the Wifi Tether app, use the app.... No matter what is said you are going to use it so go for it..
