So, I remember reading all the threads awhile back when Verizon stopped their unlimited data plans but I don't remember hearing a definitive answer. If I use my update to go from my current DInc to the Galaxy Nexus, and sign a new 2 year, will I still be grandfathered into my unlimited plan? Thanks in advance for reclarifying something that I'm sure was answered. I just couldn't seem to find it.

Yes. As long as you dont change to a different plan you will be grandfathered in.

But since the galaxy nexus is a 4g phone that involves a data plan change so you wouldn't be grandfathered. That's how they're going to get everyone.

Update:
Scratch that, they do say their plans are for both 3g and 4g but I'd still double check that you'd be grandfathered. I think the reason most people's date usage is so low is because the network isn't quite fast enough for the things that use a lot of data but with 4g we may see people getting screwed. I personally use wifi as much as possible, saves battery and is generally faster.

Nope....if you look at their data plans, there is no difference between 3g and 4g plans....data is data. Unlike other companies that charge more for the 4g plans (even if you don't live in an area with 4g...) Verizon is currently not doing that.

They have always said, ever since the launch of 4G phones, that existing smartphone customers are grandfathered when upgrading, even to a 4G phone.

Does only 3g/4g apply toward data plan? so WIFI use does not?

Yes, any time you are connected to a WiFi network, you are no longer using your 3g/4g .

This truly is a moot point. Really semantics. There really is no unlimited plan anymore with VZW. If you are on an unlimited plan, all this means is you won't get charged any extra if you go over, but they will throttle you if you go over 2gb. If you continuously use over 2gb you may be permanently throttled or throttled for an extended period of time. If you do not have an unlimited plan and you go over, you get charged hand over foot per mb.

So in reality it's just a semantics question anymore. The cap is 2gb. Unlimited or Not. The difference between is what happens if you go over that 2gb.

Personally, I've always used Wifi mostly to save battery life and speed. It's funny how VZW is embracing Wifi use, when they used to frown upon it. They wanted to charge for everything so they used to block blackberry from using wifi. Now they encourage you to use wifi so they can sell more smartphones without bogging down their network.

And yes, when on Wifi, you stop using VZW data. Only data you pull through their network count against your usage.

I go over 2gb about 3 months out of the year, never noticed any slow down. I don't think you get throttled til over 5gb. Maybe I am wrong, but I have not experienced it.

Yep I us about 4Gb of data a month on average on my TBolt and have never noticed throttling. The rules on the old truly unlimited data plans were that you COULD be throttled if you CONSISTENTLY used more than 5GB a month and in all the years I have been with them I can only remember one time when I noticed a significant data speed shortage.

And you are not charged "hand over foot" for your overages, you are charged 10/GB overage you have the tools (MyVerizon data usage widget and text message warnings) to know how much data you are using. If you go significantly over it you will know.

They didn't frown upon it, they just didn't always have the OEM's induce WiFi on their phones. It wasn't really necessary at the time. As phones become more advanced they have become more data hungry and it has become a necessity that supplement their cellular data connection with outside sources (Wifi) to take full advantage of what the newer phones can do and Verizon is changing with the times educating their employees and customers on how to use it.

You, sir, are a moron.

TMo is the carrier that throttles after 2 GB. As you can see in the posts above mine, and as every other VZW customer will attest, they do not throttle.

There is a lot of confusion on this. I don't think it's unreasonable to confuse what the different carriers are doing.

However, at the end of the day, the reality is as @vzwrocks said... If you are grandfathered into an Unlimited Data plan today, you can keep Unlimited Data as long as you do not change to the 2gb plan or remove your data plan. If you get 4g your Unlimited Plan can stay with you. If you get a new phone it can stay with you, if you upgrade it can stay with you.

I just changed the minutes on my plan a month or so ago and asked explicitly if it would effect my Unlimited Data and the answer was no. (The reality was no as well, which was nice.)

Bottom line, hold on to your Unlimited Plan until they pry it from your cold dead fingers. ;)

As far as throttling goes, VZW has publicly stated that they may start throttling the top 5% of users. That's all they have said. They MAY do it and only to the top 5%, no usage was specifically mentioned as a trigger.
