AgreedIt will be great to have consistency across carriers. It makes for a much better experience.
I dont mind Google message app with rcs to be standard , Andriod needs this as the carriers had their own version that didn't mix well with othersDang. I guess that means we're about to lose another app/service to force more Google on us?
Going by these quotes from the article:I dont mind Google message app with rcs to be standard , Andriod needs this as the carriers had their own version that didn't mix well with others
The downside? It will use Verizon’s infrastructure rather than Google’s:
Through this collaboration, Messages will work with Verizon’s network and RCS messaging service to provide a seamless experience for Android users. In addition, Google will work with Verizon to provide a robust business-to-consumer messaging ecosystem using RCS.
Verizon also confirmed that customers currently or still using Verizon’s Message+ app will also get full access to RCS capabilities with Google Messages by the end of the year, including embedded high-res pictures and videos, real-time conversation notifications, animated GIFs and more.
Yeah im fine with the collaboration, but what you mentioned here im not clear what you mean ?
"And I'm still salty that manufacturers gave up integrated voice dialing to Google Assistant's inferior voice dial abilities".
Gotcha and understand well hopefully this doesn't happen with messages .Not all of Google's products have been the Holy Grail. Before Google Assistant came along, I could voice dial without fail. Because voice dial abilities are required in my job, I need that accuracy. In those phones, it only dialed contacts. Now when I do it, GA thinks it needs to do a web search and many times will dial whatever random business it finds from a Google search rather than the actual contact name I said that is stored in my synced contacts with Google. In earlier versions of GA, I could limit it to only searching my contacts list, but Google took that necessary feature away.
I can't simply try another app or service because none exist. Google moved in and everybody else left. I fear the same with this. Google is now going to take over the SMS segment, and everyone else backing out will leave us with no options when things go sideways.
Switch to Signal - privacy, privacy
Only if everyone you know uses it which, in my case, isn’t even remotely true.
I think this is almost a situation unique to the U.S. or North America in general. In many parts of the world, people have abandoned texting almost universally, going with other chat services instead.Unfortunately, I must agree with you as well. Same thing goes for any other messaging platform as well. Unless you can convince every single person in your life too jo in and use a single messaging platform, none of these make a difference. Most people on iOS and Android Use the SMS standard whether or not People want to believe it or not lol. For example signal, WhatsApp, slack, etc. You have to convince your friends and family to use the app versus regular SMS texting on your phone which is default stock.
