My phone volume is quiet & muffled even though the icon reads that it is too the maxim level. How do I change it back? It did this on its own, it wasn't dropped, or had water damage. Has anyone experienced this?

Welcome to Android Central! Are you talking about the external speaker, or the phone's earpiece? Does anything sound normal, or do all sounds from various different apps or functions sound the same? If everything sounds muffled, the speaker might have blown.
