Verizon Motorola Trade-Up Program...How does it work?

I've seen a couple of different stories where people are getting denied for the program based on their device (Defy XT) at the Verizon store because it's not on THEIR list, even though it's on the Moto List.
Then I've seen people where they take in ANY moto phone to their Verizon store with nothing else and they immediately get a $100 discount.

What's your experiences so far with this?
Did you have to bring the UPC code or did they not care?
Only certain devices?
Instant rebate or mail in?

I was just denied today on a Motorola Admiral with a cracked screen. Customer service for Verizon stated the condition was irrelevant, but the manager in the store said the phone had to be in fair condition. (no cracked screen, water damage, etc.) This would have scored me a $100 instant rebate/credit for my account with no box otherwise.

I called back in to customer service and they went to bat for me calling the store, but she said the manager was talking in circles. Funny, I thought the same thing when I was there this morning...
The Motorola code is MOTOJB100 link (Motorola - A Google Company) and is not related to the Verizon recycle program (you have to make this clear). The admirals are cheap on Ebay, just make sure you get one in FAIR condition that can be turned on with a clean ESN.

Can this discount be used when buying the phone at full retail? I went to a Verizon store Saturday n the rep told me I could only use the discount on upgrades. (every time I go into a VZW store they always try to get me to upgrade).

I think it will depend on the person you talk to... it's kind of a gray area as it's like, "trade in your old Moto device towards the purchase of a new device". Hard to say =\

OP - It was pretty easy to do:

Brought in used Droid X2 (no charger or box or whatever) and applied the $100 to the purchase of the Droid Maxx. You ought to be able to bring any eligible device on Moto's site, provided the rep you are working with knows that any of the listed devices are eligible and NOT just the Droid 3 and X2 (refer to whatfoxisbubba#AC said).

YMMV, as always. Some reps may not let you apply the credit right away, but you should be able to apply it to your bill as well.

Persistence pays off. Just got back from a different corporate store and I was able to get the $100 credited to my account at the kiosk via an in store gift card. I used a Sprint Moto Admiral with a broken screen, no battery and no back. ($7 eBay) The rep just used the above code for the moto trade up program, the esn from each phone and had me out of there in 15 mins. Happy, happy, happy
