Verizon SIII JB Upgrade to 4.1.2

Has been a rough week. Woke up last week with phone constantly losing data- kept going into Airplane mode. No phone calls or data would last more than a few seconds. Frustrated and went to Verizon. They swapped Sim and it worked for a few seconds. In car outside store Airplane mode returned, constantly. Went back in and they said it must be one of my apps. Now an app was trying to auto-update when the Airplane mode debacle happened, so I removed that app. Still a problem. (Reminder to not let apps auto-update. If there is a glitch it can be a real problem).

Verizon store was useless to help me find what app, so I restored to factory condition. That solved the Airplane mode problem, but while rebooting phone it mentioned an update. I didn't know it was 4.1.2 Thought it was 4.1.1 Phone was speedier, but that might be because of the 4.1.2 update or because my apps were not restored. My backups failed to restore so I have been manually re-installing all the apps I can remember using. Having to re-authorize email and other accounts. Good thing is I will have less bloat from my own apps I never used, bad thing is remembering which ones I liked and occasionally used. Play store tells me which ones I have purchased IF I scroll to them, not so much with free apps.

Still haven't got everything the way I like it, but am liking some features of 4.1.2

By the way, when they authorized my new Sim, they turned off my wife's Sim. She had to go to the Verizon store the same day to fix that.
Later she would get the 4.1.2 update without having to go to factory defaults. She just lost some email for a bit, then it came back.

Ive noticed way better battery stats, usually with hard use I would run down my battery in a few hours, I'd say its almost doubled it now

Edit: after using outside of my house the batter has dropped quite a bit, main culprit wakelock. Not sure what's doing it though because i have twitter and Facebook set at refresh every 4 hours and the main screen weather up at manual refresh.

Open the camera app and press and hold to take a picture and it takes pictures in burst mode, now you don't have to fiddle with the camera settings. Nice new addition

Like some others I have not received the update. If I go to software update->check new it always says service unavailable. I called VzW and they claimed the latest version was 4.1.1. Is there something wrong with my phone or should I just be more patient and hope the update arrives some day?

After the update, my battery is not doing nearly as well. I had the same issue when the Jelly Bean update occurred, so I'm hoping it improves with time. Yesterday I'd go through 40% of my battery in under five hours, without even touching it. When I looked at the usage (no screen shot), I had majority of the battery being burned up by the Android OS, with second biggest culprit being Maps. Again, it was merely sitting by me at the same desk it normally sits at, but burning through battery. Even this AM I burned through 10% with minimal usage after I took it off the charger, in less than 30 minutes. Rebooted it, so let's hope that helps, or it just calms down a bit with time.

Maps could be Google Now and your location settings, although I've found that tends to settle down after a while. The high use of "Android OS" could be many things as that's a pretty generic item, but I've found, for example, that when one of my accounts has issues syncing that Android OS will spike and start to kill my battery.

Generally, I recommend that if after an OTA update you start having issues like this (system services/apps draining battery), it's often best to do the dreaded factory reset and run through the setup wizard again. It sucks, I know, but more than likely will fix your problem.

Rooted S3 here with stock image/ROM. I used Triangle Away to get rid of my flash count and to preserve the "Device status: Normal." I downloaded the update and it installed using CWM, after it installed it asked two questions, 1) if I wanted to prevent flashing the stock bootloader (I said yes, of course) and 2) if I wanted to maintain root (and again, I said yes). Phone booted up (after a scary 5 seconds of it stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy S3 screen), and it said update failed. However when I went into the status, my phone says its on 4.1.2 and I still have root.

I was prompted to update my phone as I was walking out the door around midnight on Friday and let it update. Not sure why but I was in a hurry and just clicked okay. What you described is similar to my experience and I was left baffled. Upon restarting I was told the update failed in a pop-up window. Initially looking deeper I was told the update failed with an error code 410. I checked for an OTA update since the update had supposedly failed, was informed there was none, and then went back to check my details listed about the device. My phone shows as completely successfully updated. It's been 3 days without any issues. Go figure.

If you're rooted and have CWM, you definitely don't run to run an OTA update downloaded via the phone's update service. It will fail every time.

FYI -- If your apps fail to restore after a factory reset or switching devices, etc, you can always go to the Play Store and bring up "My Apps". By default, it will show the apps installed on the phone, but if you swipe to the left, it will show all apps associated with your account...which can make figuring out which apps you're missing a bit easier.

Cannot stress enough that one should never accept an OTA from carrier or manufacturer when running a custom ROM or if you have a custom recovery. It's a coin toss at best to try to predict the results of doing so.

Hi, I'm new here. I have a verizon Galaxy S3. Is it possible for me to reject the 4.1.2 update to prevent it from installing itself? It downloaded automatically. (it did it over 4g without my permission.:( )
I have root access.

I don't want to mess with ROMs because I am content with my phone as it is. I just don't want verizon changing it without my permission.

Ever since the 4.1.2 update, my signal is better, and more 4g shows up, but my stock keyboard keeps crashing when using stock browser. Didn't happen before the update. Guess I'll have to quit being a cheapskate and go buy a good keyboard app.

I got the upgrade the other day, and I haven't seen the issue I've been getting, so here goes:

It's been stated in the 4.1.2 upgrade that there was something upgraded with the Gallery. When I go into Gallery, I can open it up just fine, browse all the photos EXCEPT my main Camera folder. I open it up and then it almost immediately locks up then the app crashes. I thought maybe I ran out of memory on my SD card, and it's close, but it won't even let me go in to delete files. It's frustrating. Any clue on some help?

Cheers,
CC

I got the update earlier this week. Anyone know how to turn off the haptic feedback and click sound from the keyboard? I have been all through the setting and haptic feedback is off for the buttons but not the keyboard. Any help would be appreciated.

Settings --> Language & Input --> Samsung Keyboard (click the gear icon) --> Advanced --> Key-tap vibration/sound

Pulled the update and installed last night, noticing a significant improvement in battery life. Before the update my phone would randomly go through extended periods of time when it would remain 'awake' with the screen off. Perhaps (hopefully) the update helped with this....

anybody notice your charging is going really slow. I mean really slow! I plugged it in at work at 64% and in 45min only charged upto 69%. Not normal speeds at all for me. Now 15 more minutes went by and it actually lost 1% charge. Switched on my WiFi during that time to see if that would help searching for updates via 4g as it is kinda weak 1 to 2 bars in the office here. Usually it charges up pretty quick.

I unplugged the charger from the wall and the Bolt still showed up in the battery icon. Not until I took the plug out of the phone did it go away but that still took about 5-10seconds to recognize. I find it strangely coincidental I am having these issues directly after 4.1.2 update.

I was having that problem before the update. Changed out chargers, problem solved.
