Video files unplayable

A coworker of mine a while back got the OTA update to Froyo. Today he brought up the fact to me that he has been unable to watch the video files that he had on his phone before the update. When you go into the gallery it shows 8 videos, you open the folder it shows 8 empty boxes. You try to watch any of the videos it says that it can't play the file. These were all playable before the 2.2 OTA update.

Any ideas?

Format? Codec? Has he tried another player like RockPlayer?
