Problems after changing vocode option

When I clicked evrc-b my phone couldn't make calls it just kept popping up "call lost". So I tried 13k and it works. Is there something I have to do to get evrc-b to work? Or should I stick with 13k or back to the default evrc? Which one is the best one to use of the three?

The programming menu has lots of really useful features if you know what your doing.. but there is a potential to destroy your device...

I also experienced the "call lost" problem after I changed the 04Vocode to EVRC-B. I then changed it to 13k and got some improvement. Why is the EVRC-B setting stopping the outgoing calls. Perhaps the promised Dec. 11th software upgrade will fix the problems

Hmm, I don't have any errors or problems calling out using the EVRC-B setting. Perhaps it is a local setting with how your towers are configured?

yea, me neither (knock on wood) i have it on EVRC-B and my calls go through and are quite clear (i don't hear my voice echo anymore)

For all those that are confused, they are discussing changing the vocode setting by doing the following:

To get into the programming menu, from the call screen enter ##PROGRAM and press send. Enter code 000000 In option 04, you can change the vocode option to EVRC-B, or 13K, it made my in-call audio sound better. Your phone will reset after you exit and apply the new setting.

Warning: Use caution when in the programming menu, you could potentially brick your phone.

I set mine to EVRC-B .. voice quality is very good. Results may vary.

It is the newest codec on that list (2007)

I've set mine at EVRC-B... voice quality is very good.. I've also heard that 13k is better than plain 'ol EVRC.

QCELP (13k) (Qualcomm Code Excited Linear Prediction), also known as Qualcomm PureVoice, is a speech codec developed in 1994 to increase the speech quality of the IS-96A codec used earlier in CDMA networks. It was replaced later with EVRC since it provides better speech quality with fewer bits. There are two versions available: QCELP8 and QCELP13 and they use 8 and 13 Kbit/s respectively.

Enhanced Variable Rate CODEC (EVRC) is a speech codec used in CDMA networks. It was developed in 1995 to replace the QCELP vocoder which used more bandwidth on the carrier's network, thus EVRC's primary goal was to offer the mobile carriers more capacity on their networks while not increasing the amount of bandwidth or wireless spectrum needed.[1]. EVRC uses RCELP technology, which Qualcomm claims improves speech quality with lower bit rates

Enhanced Variable Rate Codec B (EVRC-B) is a speech codec used by CDMA networks. EVRC-B is an enhancement to EVRC and compresses each 20 milliseconds of 8000 Hz, 16-bit sampled speech input into output frames of one of the four different sizes: Rate 1 - 171 bits, Rate 1/2 - 80 bits, Rate 1/4 - 40 bits, Rate 1/8 - 16 bits.

Option 5 -> Data Rates
Mine is set to 153.6/9.6. I am guessing these are down/up speeds? There is an option for 153.6/153.6. Lets see if it makes a difference.

From what I've read on a thread on the Motorola site not all areas of the country have EVRC-B therfore you won't be able to make calls so your stuck with EVRC or 13k until they make the upgrade. My wife was complaining about the poor quality on my new Droid and I changed it to EVRC-B and now it works great. I travel alot so I texted the programming instructions to myself in case I'm in an area that doesn't support EVRC-B if I need to change it back to EVRC.

I also experienced the phone not working on EVRC-B. When I switched to 13K the callers sound much clearer but if there is any background noise on the caller's end it is extremely loud. I was on the phone with someone today who was shuffling papers at their desk and that noise came through loud and clear. My phone is back on EVRC. Interestingly, I swapped out my first Droid 2 days ago for the same problem (muffled caller voice and loud background noises).
