Android Central Question

I have been using AA since its original release. Up until recently, it has worked as intended via wired connection to the "infotainment" system in my 2019 VW GTI. Within the past month, a new version of AA (4.9.5944934) was installed on my Pixel 4 XL and voice commands to AA have stopped working. Doing a long press on the steering wheel voice button displays the AA dots as expected, but it does not respond to voice commands. It acts as if my car microphone isn't working. However, I can use the car's built-in voice control and mic without AA without problems. The software in my car has not been updated, only AA.

If I say "OK Google" instead, my Pixel responds and executes the command via AA.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to Android Central! Check with VW to see if there are any firmware updates as well.

This sounds like a problem I've noticed recently. I don't use voice commands regularly, but it always worked great in the past when I would say "Hey Google" and give a command.

Around mid-February 2020, I started noticing that the car would not execute commands properly. Most of the time, the listening indicator comes up on the display, but it continues listening to ambient sounds of driving down the road after I stop speaking. Eventually, it appears to time out as if I didn't give a command at all.

When the Google Assistant does answer, it is always, "OK, who do you want to call?" That response doesn't make sense when most of the times this has happened, the command has been, "Text _______." When I do provide a name when it asks who I want to call, it never responds to actually call that contact. It just times out listening to me just like the majority of the times I try to use voice commands.

I got my 2019 Honda in August and had a Sony Xperia XZ Premium at the time. That phone died and I replaced it with an LG V40. I thought I had used the Google Assistant with Android Auto since changing phones, but I couldn't remember. now that I read this post, my issues probably started around the same time that the OP's issues started. I just don't use the feature often enough to know exactly when this became a problem.

The difference between my issue and what the OP describes is that I have the same problem whether pressing the voice command button on the car or using "OK Google." The only way it works for me is to long press the home button on the phone itself to trigger Google Assistant, but then it doesn't respond through the car speakers.

Since my last reply 3 months ago, my LG V40 has received an upgrade from Android 9 to Android 10, and I've performed a factory reset without restoring from a backup. There was still no change to the behavior of the Android Auto voice commands.

I noticed a new icon last night (June 5, 2020) next to the Bluetooth connection status on the car's display. I didn't think much of it until this morning when I tried some voice commands and they were all accepted successfully. The Play Store shows Android Auto was updated on May 27th, but I don't know when the update was installed on my phone. It is not among the 31 updates my phone has received in the last 2 days, and voice commands were not working as of Thursday, June 4th.

The only changes listed in the Play Store are:
  • Ability to reorder apps in the launcher
  • Ability to turn off notification sounds
  • Ability to hide/show apps in Android Audo
  • Bug fixes and other improvements
