VZW Killing Unlimited Plans (Finally)

Customers who purchase phones at full retail price and are on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan.

So update on this, that's a temporary stopgap. At some point, unlimited plans will cease to exist within the Verizon system. The date just isn't known yet.

Who knows?...Everything is speculation the way I see it...for verizon to make a customer change there plan is beyond ridiculous..if thats the case I might wind up switching or never upgrading from my current device..

I spoke with people within Verizon, specifically billing.

But you're right, who knows if they are being fed correct info?

What I was told, (for now) there will be an option to keep the unlimited data plan if you are willing to pay the entire unsubsidized cost for new devices. At some point, there is a plan to do away with all unlimited data plans, I guess the question is how does that happen and when does that happen?

It's all going to come down to pricing for me. I love unlimited, but would also love to share data across all my devices and not have to pay as much. If the price is right, it may work out, but I would bet the price isn't going to be right.

So basically my Nexus has to last me a good 36 months starting from now, because that is how long it'll take me to save up for a full retail price phone :)

My I also suggest only going with phones with user replacable batteries in that case :D Something I've always done anyways.

Same here. I was nearly always under 2gig on the 3g but because streaming video is meh on the droid X. On the Gnex it's so very very nice..... So i don't see 2gig being enough. If I could pay less then unlimited for say a 10gig limit on my phone and share that with my Xoom for less then what I'm playing for unlimited now cool. But don't see any reason to pay the same for a limit.

If I have to battle with Verizon to keep it that's exactly what I am going to do..because for them to force customers to change is beyond idiotic..its going to piss off a lot of people including there own employees who still have it as i do too..they want to boast about what data plans work for such and such groups of customers..well how about leaving well enough alone..because for me to change my plan KNOWING I have a 4G device and I use a ridiculous amount of data..you damn right I am going to fight with them..they got some nerve folks...they want to throw statistics out there about percentages on what customers don't use ever 1 GB of data..which is a complete joke..because NOW that 4G is out all over the place..its obvious enough people will go over the usage..its ridiculous..It doesn't make any sense how they are going to force customers to change..not right and unreasonable..ill wait to hear the official word from them because I spoke to at least 3 representatives from the company and I was told I wont lose the plan even when I upgrade..so ill take there word over some article that probably was created by some idiot who heard half a story..:confused:

Just a reminder for those that forgot(or never had one). Coming from a feature phone to an OG Droid Verizon FORCED a plan change. Also going from 3G to 4G Verizon yet again FORCED a plan change. So to say that they won't do it again for VoLTE or some other "feature" isn't totally outside the realm of possibility.

What change did they force going from 3g to 4g ? I had the X upgraded to my nexus and my plan stayed the same.

Thanks to the FCC, we'll be able to switch sim cards to our new phones without changing our plans.

If you currently have an unlimited 3G plan, I would switch the the unlimited 4G right now.

It's the same price for you ($30), but it is a different plan in Verizon's system.

Same here upgraded a Droid X to a Gnex last weekend. "Currently" on 4g with unlimited.

Totally false. I use to work for VZW. Its an option. They tell you that so they can commission on the sale. They lock you in a 2 year making you think that's the only way. Its a scam and managers encourage this behavior to make sales quota. I never did it. it is ethically wrong. Its why I left. If you ever want to activate equipment you bought at retail price or off some other place like Craigslist make sure to have the sales rep show you he has selected "month to month" which is activation with no two year. you are just paying monthly on a contract plan without the two year contract. I hope people read this because I hate when reps prey on the unsavy consumer.

Weird. I remember doing this back in the day. I'm pretty sure they put me on a 2 year contract, but I had them note that I brought my own device. I also had them note I could upgrade anytime or leave without penalty.

Let's go back in time shall we. Vzw gets iPhone and makes a lot of deals. Customer get screwed. What 3g smart is getting lte this fall........waiting OK I'll tell its iPhone 5 lte and guess that's a lot iPhones being upgraded to 4g so what will vzw do what any carrier would stick the user and say by by unlimited data.

ding ding ding. Just add this to the list for those that just had to have the jesus phone on Verizon. Lost NE2 discounts, reduced WFG, no annual upgrade or one year contract, $30 upgrade fee. Gotta pay for that butt rape they received from apple somehow. What's next on evil V's list?

Bottom line is Verizon can do anything they want whenever they want. Speculation is fine, but thats exactly what it is, speculation.

Cell phones/service is like gasoline, whatever they charge we will pay. Sad to say but even if gas was 8 bucks, I would still buy it. Not many want to walk or ride a bike 30 miles to work.

So, the way I read it, My wife is the main account and she has an iphone 4. I got a thunderbolt on the account with hers in April of last year and I have unlimited 4g with unlimited hotspot and she has unlimited 3g. When She gets a new iphone (that will be lte) if we pay full price for her phone, we can still keep unlimited on both of our plans even though she is switching from 3g to 4g?

For now, that is my understanding.

At some point, that option will disappear too

(I suspect for more casual users, they would never consider paying full price for a phone)
