VZW Killing Unlimited Plans (Finally)

We do because he said it plain as day. When you upgrade, they will force you onto the new plans.

We don't know if that's all.

And until it's in the system ready to implement, it's not final.

Sad thing is we all knew this would happen. It WILL happen to Sprint eventually too. They dont want to keep up with data consumption. Its not that they cant. I look at it like when they started charging for TXT msgs to begin with. Back in 2000 you didnt pay anything for a text. They figured out they could make a lot of money off of it and so started charging. Same thing here. They are going to squeeze us for all its worth. I read an article somewhere about the stopping of unlimited data and it had a part saying they are having a hard time getting new customers so they want to increase their revenue off existing ones. That really reads "raise prices."

It's a rather unfortunate turn of events but definitely not unexpected. I think we need to see more details about this plan before we jump to conclusions. Remember, the devil will be in the details and we hardly know anything about it other than they want to move people from unlimited to shared data plans when you upgrade.

Losing unlimited wouldn't be a huge deal unless they charge obscenely high prices for a very small amount of data. If that were the case, then taking advantage of an unlocked GSM Nexus and jumping to another carrier sounds like a viable option (at least for me).

And I also agree, those thinking about jumping to Sprint are really only delaying the inevitable. Unlimited data across the board will go away even if it's Sprints number one advantage over the other carriers at the moment.

Well, I guess it's time to download everything and anything!

Nope. This takes effect when you sign a new contract and does not affect you until your current one expires.

Then I won't make a new contract lol

Byrds is right. They went with unlimited to get people roped in. Now that people think they can't live without a smartphone are "stuck".

However why mess with the people that are on unlimited. I am willing to bet all the people going from an iPhone to the iPhone 5 most do not use 2gb of data. Most of the iPhone users I know....heck most of the smart phone users I know stay below this threshold. So it is conceivable that us $30 unlimited may not get touched.

If so I will downgrade to a regular cell phone or I will just not have one. I lived without a smartphone before. I lived without a cell phone before.

It's not our voice that makes Verizon change policies. It is our lack of financial support that makes them change.

Inevitably, the inevitable is going to happen. That isn't surprising is it? Just don't buy a subsidized phone, and make sure you have LTE now. Just dont sign a new contract. That should buy some more time! Is it just me, or has Verizons network been slow and crappy at times....

So essentially we have to have everyone on an LTE device then pay full price for phones when you want a new one. This is completly rediculous. What's the point if having a phone with these abilities if watching one movie on it kills you data plan for the month?

I guess when it's time to upgrade, I'll leave. It's the only way I can show verizon I don't like this decision.

Crack the code, people:

If you have unlimited LTE data on your phone, why install FIOS at home? Especially as home phones disappear and people are starting to cut cable TV.

So Verizon is now competing with itself -- while at the same time having to buy more broadcast spectrum to continue to expand LTE.

If they keep people suckling data from both the Verizon and the Verizon Wireless teats, they make twice as much money. So now they have this juggling act to maintain.

At the same time, they did make $1.7B profit last fiscal year and are just getting bigger... how much is enough, V?

Just because I have unlimited data lte on my phone doesn't mean I need to leave fios I mean the data stream is not the mist reliable for home use. I chuckle and folks trying to use there phone as at home internet replacement. Its nit meant to be.

Not to mention in the TOS it mentions that it's still not intended to be a replacement for a dedicated broadband connection.

They'd only be competing with themselves implement places where FioS is available. In most places, people have only one or two options at most when it comes to wired service.

And Verizon isn't a non-profit.

Not meant to be connected to a router -- however I did USB-tether my mom's PC last week in order to get something faster than her 128k DSL.

It wasn't a replacement for a dedicated broadband connection, except for the fact that it kind of was.

If I can do that like once a month, mom doesn't need FIOS when I visit, because I can do work from her house, and she can get her email just fine over the cheap crappy DSL and doesn't mind waiting an hour for her pictures to upload.

These kinds of decisions are being made all the time. Like, if you only watch Netflix movies, and you have a micro-USB to HDMI adapter, you can watch Netflix on the big screen using your GNex and maybe suddenly you don't need cable. Everybody weighs what they can afford... Verizon wants to not step on its own toes without making rigid rules about tethering and routing.

That's the other thing I was thinking of. Just cancel the data portion of the plans. Use just the minutes on the phone. When you are at work or home with Wifi or one of the multitude of hot spots around use Wifi and just drop mobile data all together. Personally I use it at work communicate with the other techs with gtalk. We can do that fine with Wifi and same with email.

You are required to have a data plan when use a smartphone on your VZW account.

Reposting what I said in another thread like this since its relevant and multi threads are going for this:

Reading the text of the press release it only looks like this is affecting those on 3G unlimited trying to go to 4G unlimited. Didn't read that those already on 4G are on the chopping block just yet but those on the 3G bandwagon are in for a shock if they aren't on 4G by the time this hits. I'm not going to freak out just yet being on 4G unlimited already but my wife who is on 3G unlimited I may need to keep an eye on what happens for her. Luckily she isn't a power user so I doubt it would be that painful for her.

Yes but you're on a family plan so if she gets put on it you're going to get forced into it as well. It's a shared family data plan. It's a completely insane policy and if they do this they're going to lose A LOT of customers. I mean whats the point of using a data connect phone if 90% of the features make you have to spend more. I mean if say it equals out to 2gb per person, one netflix movie stream would kill your monthly allotment.
