I know nothing about rooting, hacking, or any of that stuff when it comes to android stuff, I, like most others, have been waiting for gingerbread for my droid x, stock verizon approved what is it, .340 wasnt cutting it no more. I got to looking around on the internet, and found a download link of .588 and thought to myself, "should I go forward? I really don't know what Im doing", and then the excited part of me said, "go for it, live a little", will...now I want to go back to the verizon approved stock froyo, and I don't have a clue how to do this.

On a website I got .588, it said to download it, move the file on the root of your sdcard, rename the file update, or update.zip, god I dont know, then turn the phone off, hold the power button and home button, then use the volume rocker buttons to select update.zip, and I was on gingerbread.

I've tried to do some reading, searching through threads, and Im overwhealmed, Im drowning and dont have a life jacket here. I've read that one can update to .595 and still be able to get the OTA update when verizon releases it, how do you do this being on .588? Im happy without being rooted, being all stock, what ever the heck is my best suggested option here.

I downloaded a zip file of .595 off of droid x forum, got it on my phones sdcard, and the guy said something about using clockwork recovery to install it, WHAT?, Im assuming thats powering the phone off, holding the home and power buttons and using the volume rocker to select what you want. I tired this, and all I get is the little android man and a exclamation mark and wont let me do a thing, so I pull the battery and try again, same thing. Im freaking out here man.

HELP!!! Thanks

Yup! Your way deep in unknown waters alright...please read and study the stickies here. That way when we give u advice it won't be chinese to you. Droid X Bootstrapper (aka Clockwork Recovery ) is the app you need to flash. 595, not the phones exclamation guy. It gets even deeper if and when you need the D2 bootstrapper ..read and study. YouTube,Google, and the Stickies here are very resourceful.
"Official full SBF" sticky is a good start. ;-)

Thanks for the advice, I feel like a guy who wanted to get more horsepower from the engine of his car, pop the hood open, and went to tearing down the engine without knowing a damn thing about mechanics. And NOW...I have an engine thats tore into a million pieces, laying all around my garage floor, and with not a damn clue how it all goes back together. LOL, just as will laugh about it instead of cry.

I've been there buddy, this forum was a huge help, and yes laughter is the best medicine.

I have owned an android phone for less then a month and already had to restore it probably 8 times total. 6 of which occured just trying to get to .595 from stock.

It is pretty overwhelming at first, just stay calm and read a lot before diving in. I can't stress this enough, read a lot on rooting and your specific device, you will save yourself a lot of headache.

I am on .595 (deodexed and rooted), had to install it a total of six times before I didn't soft brick my phone and have to reload .340 and start over.

Start off by downloading RSDLite and Updating all the drivers for it before you do anything. Then down load the .340 SBF.

Now most important you can't jump from .340 to .595 you will brick your device and have to start over.

You have to find a three part download for .588.(This step by the way is the one that caused so many soft bricks till I found it on a different forum)

Then once that is done you simply update to the version of .595 you want.

Good luck, it's well worth it to get rid of all the bloat VZW throws on their handsets.

I'll third (or is it fourth) the "read up" advise but what's cool about bricking your phone is that you learn so much in addition to the reading. Just don't let the uncertainty keep you from trying...just make sure you have the time! How's your progress?

Not so great, still on .588, keep in mind here as I've stated, idk what in the hell im doing, but I tried this sbf'ing thing, I have windows xp, downloaded and installed Rsdlite 4.8, and then a full what ever sbf file of. 340 so I could go back to the vzw stock froyo, but when I ll select start, once putting the phone in bootloader mode, click start, it'll say "in progress" go through 100% and it'll will come up next and say "failed flashing process. Im not rooted, don't even know how to get rooted.

Just be glad you own a Motorola that has a locked bootloader because with efuse on the device it makes it harder to completely brick your device. In my opinion Droid X is a good test device for user learning to root because it is easy to recover from a bricked state..

As long as you learn how to use a SBF you can restore from so many mistakes....

I've been reading up some, and learned a little bit, www.koooler.com, I think has a pretty good site for explaining to people such as myself, the lingo of hacking a droid phone.
