What about the HTC One (M8) DON'T you like?

Re: What about the M8 DON'T you like?

That's already been established, a lot of people seem to refuse to believe it.

It's not a question of is it empty or not. I think the question is could they have designed it better

Everyone thinks they are electronic engineers and know how internal components should be arranged. It is funny though reading their rants and recommendations.

I don't know what people actually are thinking?

Do they really think that HTC deliberately just put a bar there for no reason other than to have their logo displayed? They really expect nothing to be under it?

I actually don't mind it as it raises the touch back/home/multitask button so your thumb doesn't have to reach as far down. It helps it make an easy experience.

Using the phone, if I reach down to the black bar (where people would want the screen to start), it's actually quite uncomfortable if the back/home/multitask buttons were there.

And taken with a grain of salt. If they wanted to remove the HTC logo they would have.

I wouldn't be surprised, it's their flagship. Also, as was discussed on the Android Central podcast, the on screen buttons may have been a late addition and removing the capacitive buttons that would have been on that bar may have just left an empty bar. We'll probably never know.

This.

Couldn't have put it much better myself. It's a trade-off (black bar for device thickness, at its simplest) that affects the user experience. Some will prefer the black bar, while others the smallest bezel area possible.

As long as those in the discussion understand there is almost always a deliberate reason behind design decisions like this, we're good...

I dropped it in the common questions/problems sticky in the hope it'll be informative there.

When I add music and audiobooks, which are in seperate folders, the music app loads the audiobooks too even though the folder is marked by the audiobook app that it is "no media." Also, any audiobook artwork gets picked up in Gallery. Don't remember this problem with the M7.

I was able to make the home buttons black bar transperent on my lock screen but not my pages.

I'd like to use Dot View as a normal feature rather than have to buy a case to use it.

The bezel. I do understand and trust that HTC had to make some compromises and this was one of the trade-offs.
I am used to it and I don't really notice anymore. But when I compare it with the s5 and how easy that phone is to handle with one hand I feel a little jealous. Sucks that they both have 5 inch screens but the s5 is smaller

Biggest dislike is the camera. It wasn't competitive in 2013 and its even less competitive now. Duo lens is cool, but most people don't want to do anything with their pictures except post them to a social media site. They aren't spending time making them more artistic.

Best feature? The metal body is smashingly gorgeous. The Samsung S5 may have jumped the plastic shark, but the HTC is gorgeous. Sony too.

I want to agree with this but my Girlfriend spends a grip of time making a picture perfect before posting to IG or Facebook. Some people really REALLY care about their social media image.

The buttons: volume & power. They're too easy to push by mistake. Should require a more firm, deliberate press. I'm always pressing the volume by mistake.

I didn't care for the HTC black bar bezel on the front, the camera wasn't impressive, the power button on top of the phone and the metal body.

I consider those dislikes to be pretty minor for me, except the camera and the HTC black bar on the front. It made the screen feel much smaller when your touch buttons were yet another bar on top of a bar. Overall I thought it was a real nice phone, but the S5 seems like a better choice for me personally.

Overall I'm enjoying the phone, I guess. But too big annoyances.

1. When locking the phone with the power button on top I grip the phone in one hand and click the button with my index finger. However I always seem to hit the volume button with the palm of my hand at the same time which means the power button doesn't work. I've put it into my pocket at few times not realising i hadn't actually locked it.

2. When using the phone in my right hand and reaching over to hit something on the screen on the left side with my thumb I also hit the screen on the right hand side with the inside of my palm. This means I'm touching the screen in two places and the thumb does nothing.

Both are quite annoying and happen a lot. Anybody else get this? Maybe I have extra fleshy palms or something, I don't know.

Just growing pains when using a larger phone. I had some issues like those when I first switched to my since-sold Note 3. Eventually you'll compromise and get used to it.

This is such a great phone, its close to being a perfect 10 for a 2014 release phone.

However, the shortcomings which bring it down a notch for me are:

1. Size. I've compared it to my HTC One M7, and this screen fits perfectly on the center glass of the old m7 model. If they had made the size the same but keeping the new design and specs it would've been killer.

2. An 8 ultra pixel camera with ois and the second depth perception camera would've been a perfect combo. As it stands, the camera has fun features and can take good close up pictures, but is lacking detail and I really miss OIS for videos.

3. While battery life isn't bad, had they been able to fit a 3000mah + battery (like the Z2 or G2) battery could've been killer as HTC has done a wonderful job at optimization.

And that's about it, everything else on this phone is great.

Wasted space as far as screen real estate, not wasted space in general.
