What do you G6 owners think about the OnePlus 5?

I am considering both the G6 and the OP5. Haven't bought a phone in over 2 years. Does anyone have comments about lag on the G6? I'm not a heavy user so I don't care about games or extra storage. I want to spend the minimum possible while having a decent phone that will last me 2-3 years. Any annoying battery or wifi issues?

I worry that lots of phones seem to develop lag. Some have wifi problems. And others acquire gremlins with updates. My ancient One Plus One started behaving erratically after the last Cyanogen update.

I was strongly considering the LG G6 just for the camera. Or I might get the OnePlus 5 (cheaper version). Which do you think would be better for me?

Thanks.

Good gosh why do I have such a wondering eye. I absolutely love the priorities that OnePlus puts in it's phones for a very reasonable price. That company's phones pretty much embodies my priorities in a phone. If I didn't get 2 g6's for $360 bucks, I would definitely be kicking myself for not waiting for that phone.

Unlocked phones are out for me. They don't always support a few of the native carrier features, and especially Verizon who in some cases doesnt work with some phones at all due to missing frequency bands.

Like a few of us were talking earlier, if you can get the G6 on one of the crazy sales out there, it's probably the better buy. I got my G6 for $360 (half off).

The tougher decision is if you are looking at them from the same price point. I still think the G6 is a better phone all around. In my opinion, these are the only factors that the OP5 beat the G6 in:

1)Storage - I know it doesn't have an SD card slot like the G6, but internal storage is always better than external in my opinion.
2) RAM - Honestly this is more future proofing or for bragging rights, but there are some instances where 6 GB of RAM definitely has its advantages.
3)Stock Android - This is definitely subjective depending on if you even like stock better than LGs version.
4) Software updates - OnePlus has done a great job of late getting software updates out.
5)Developer Community - If you're someone who likes to tinker in CUSTOM ROMS, or want the ability to get updates beyond 2 years of having the phone, then the OnePlus is the best on the market for that since the Nexus line has disappeared.

All this being said, the G6 beats the OP5 in every other category. As you can tell, many points on my list are very niche and usually for extreme tech enthusiasts. The better phone for most people will be the G6, especially if you get it for sale.

Thanks for your comments. Future proofing matters to me as I want to keep it for at least 2-3 years and also durability. Some buyers on TMobile have complained of glass scratching and the lens scratching just days after buying.

These all worry me. Lag, durability, future proofing. Plus I like stock Android though I might find the LG version ok.

Screen quality doesn't bug me at all. I approve of Oneplus's choice to keep 1080. But I worry that it's too big and pricey.

Both are solid but considering they are about the same price I think G6 is better bang for the buck, advantages I see of the oneplus are 6gb or ram, SD 835 and fingerprint scanner
G6 has fingerprint scanner, works perfectly.

Which device looks better to you? Do you care about water resistance or wireless charging? Those are 3 things that would sway my decision if I didnt have a G6. For me, I really like water resistance and wireless charging. They arent needed but they are are nice to have.

Theres other factors like wide angle camera on the G6 vs portrait mode on the OP5 but I would be fine with either camera honestly.

Then you gotta consider if you want wifi calling because the OP5 isnt supported on T-Mobile as of now. It may happen down the road like it did for the Axon 7 but no guarantees.

Re: OnePlus 5

I totally get it from a buyers market that actual price does matter at the time. But from a tech geek comparing the two, LG didn't design the G6 to be sold at $360, or $120 on Sprint, or even $499 unlocked. Fact is most of these deals are carrier induced, so LG already made their profit off them, now the carriers are trying to move product..

It's not just carrier induced discounts. LG had direct purchase offer of BOGO just about a month ago, 2 for $500 after rebate. Had rebate in hand and cashed within 2 weeks of purchase. Was happy with my G5 but couldn't pass up a deal to get a pair of new G6's for $250 each.

Until they support Verizon bands they are useless to me and that is a shame.

That is a great deal. The G6 for anything less than 400 bucks is probably the best bang for the buck in the cell phone market to date.

If you want future proofing, OP5 definitely wins, but I would say mainly for software updates and the developer community. The hardware for the G6 is going to be great for years to come as well. I'm just worried for timely updates and I've never had an LG phone, and an att G6 at that, so I'm assuming unlocking the bootloader in 2 years to put Lineage OS on it may be impossible.

I wouldn't worry about Lag on the G6 or not being stock. I'm a huge nerd for stock Android, but I've really enjoyed LG's take on it and it's just as smooth as any stock experience I've had. I'm very seen the threads about camera scratches as well, I always use a case, but I haven't had any of those freak issues.

Honestly, I would try to get a G6 for less than 400 bucks. If you can't find one, then I would determine if you want the ability to do the developer thing in the future. If not, I still think the G6 edges it out.

I personally don't get the "future proof" argument. It seems like people on forums like this get new phones every 6-18 months then sell it off and get the new bling bling. I like the OP5 but think the G6 is so much better: IP68, microSD, screen, wide angle lens, etc. But those are my preferences :-)

Don't know where I could find a G6 without trade ins or buying 2 for 1 for under $400 bucks. If that were so I'd probably get it if it had at least a 3 month warranty.

But otherwise, I couldn't care less about waterproofing or wireless charging. I like that the G6 is a tad narrower and has the wide angle lens but I can live with either camera. No phone camera is good in my opinion (I'm heavily into photography) and just want decent daylight pics for times I don't have a camera with me.

So I'll wait a bit, but if I can get a 64g G6 for at least $40-$50 bucks less brand new than the 64g OP5 I'd go get one. Otherwise I'm leaning to the OP5.

I should add that my current phone is well over 2 years old so that I am definitely a long term user. I wouldn't even consider changing my phone if it weren't starting to do odd things and also because it's slightly cracked.

Where do you live? Pretty sure in North America they only offer 32gb.

Yeah, future proofing honestly is like unlimited data. 99% of us don't need it, but we get it for peace of mind/bragging rights.

But these days, let's be honest, all mid range and high end phones are future proof hardware wise. The thing that will hold a phone back down the line is software updates.

Oh. I didn't know that. So that pushes me to the OP5 further as the baseline is 64g and I don't want to hassle with micro SD. And I need both of the OP5's slots for two SIM cards as I travel a lot.

For your needs I'd say the OP5 is definitely the better choice.

6 to 18 months is too long for some on here. I typically use a phone at least a couple of years. I only kept my G5 a short time because the V20 caught my eye and my ears. No desire to jump to anything until I see the V30 and very little would make me switch.
