Hey guys I know we're all really excited for the Epic coming out but I'm just wondering on how you guys plan on protecting it. Have you guys dealt with BB insurance because that's what I'm looking at right now, the no deductible part is whats nice to me because sprint is $100 and a max of 3 repairs a year. BB doesn't cover lost/stolen though while Sprint does. So anyways, what are you guys going to be using?

I'm gonna get sprint's TEP protection. It makes sense because then I can get the phone online for super cheap. I'm estimating $100-$150 so long as supply isn't an issue. However it might be given the shipping estimate on amazon.com preorders. If you get the phone for $150 on amazon and have a $100 deductible that's not too bad imo.

I don't trust BB or Radioshack or Squaretrade. they all seem to potentially leave you without your phone for a long time, don't necessarily fix the issue and might not even give you a loaner. With sprint I know they provide me with the cell coverage and will likely make sure i have a phone at all times even when repairs are happening. However if you don't like that you could potentially be getting a refurb phone then maybe this isn't the insurance for you.

Right Im a little skeptical about BB insurance, I also heard you have to pay up front as well? I mean if I get rid of the phone say a year down the road, I'm out a $120 bucks... Not too cool.

No you don't pay up front- it's $10 a month.

That said- all insurance is out to screw you. Sprint has the 100 and it wouldn't shock me if they also begin to employ a 3 unit limit per year if best buy now does because of the high rate of return on Pre, & Evo in particular.

Oh okay thanks for clearing that 10/month up. I just don't wanna run into problems with this and be SOL, I just screwed myself w/o having insurance on my Hero so I gotta buy a new phone.

I think we get insurance from Sprint? I don't know, I'm linked to another account for now and only pay attention to the phone+minutes+not screwing it up.

None. waste of money. 6 months from now I will be wanting an ew phone anyway, so there is noway I am going to pay money to get another epic.

A year from now people will be saying: "I can't wait to upgrade to the Samsung Excitement with it's Hyper AMOLED display. Ugh, all I have now is this crappy Epic 4g that I can't wait to get rid of." Yet, we may all be laughing at a statement like that now.

I'm not laughing, I know it to essentially be fact. Next year I would be we will have high end android phones with dual core cortex a9 processors running at 1.2-1.5 ghz, and 2-4 core powervr gpus. Something like an SGX543MP4 4 core powervr gpu, can do 133 MPoly/sec. Singe the epic 4g can do 90, I am guessing we need that to have any real gpu gains. Either way phones will be more than 2x as powerful in the cpu area, and 1.5-4x in the gpu area depending on how development and release go.

Our computer technology has skyrocketed since the 1970's, but phones have (besides the designs) remained relatively dormant in power advancement. With the arrival of the iPhone and Android in mobile phones back in '08, I think it's time that started to move forward faster than ever. I wouldn't be surprised if our smartphone technology will match today's computer technology within the next 3-5 years.

none. no need for insurance. I have only broken/lost one phone in the last 20 years. if I paid $10 a month for the last 20 years I would have paid out $2400!

insurance is for things you can't afford to replace! they are a suckers bet for things you can replace yourself. life insurance, liability insurance home insurance and only car insurance on cars worth more than $7500 or so.

so someone is gonna ask, what do you do if you break your epic. I will buy one on craigslist/ebay. the chance of me losing/breaking my Epic within the first six months of ownership is so small its a sucker bet to buy $60 on insurance because they will be cheaper on craigslist/ebay.

the way to make money on insurance is to open an insurance company and take money from sucker bets.

Since Sprint lets us get fully discounted upgrades every year, I don't see the point anymore. If something is defective on it, manufacturer's warranty I would hope would cover it. If I lose or break the thing, that's my own damn fault. I've been historically careful with my phones. Now my wife on the other hand, I would probably get insurance.

I use sprint insurance. Never had any issues and I always get my phone fixed or replaced for free.

No Insurance.. If My phone has problems Sprint is good about handling those problems in the 1st year of Manufacturer Warranty. I went through 3 pre's within the 1st Year. Sprint replaced them no questions asked at no cost to me. After Year I may consider insurance..

I'm guessing it's the same thing for me. Like I said, I have no idea if we have insurance. I've only had one broken phone and that was a defective battery in the iPhone 3G s. You'd think it would be easy to replace, but NO, STEVE JOBS DECIDED TO NOT INCLUDE A USER-REPLACEABLE BATTERY!:(

Oh well, gettin' the Epic with a replaceable battery, so all is good now. :)

You don't get to add insurance after 1 year. Insurance must be added within 30 days of activation.

Whether or not to carry insurance on your phone is a personal decision based on how careful you are with your phone and how well you'd be able to cope (financially) with losing it.

For my Pre, I carried insurance on it until the craigslist price came down to about $225. At that point, it seemed a little ridiculous to keep paying for insurance that had a $100 deductible. I think I had TEP for maybe 6 months.

Assuming I get the Epic (I'm still waffling), I'll probably start out with the Lost/Stolen/Destroyed policy at $4/mo (not the TEP for $7/mo) until the craigslist price of the Epic goes down to about $300 or so.

My reasoning:
1. The Extended Warranty part of the insurance only adds "wear and tear" coverage to the manufacturer's warranty. Sprint's policy on what constitutes "wear and tear" has gotten awfully strict recently. Basically, if the manufacturer don't cover it, Sprint will tell you to call Asurion and pay the $100 deductible. Thanks, but no thanks, Sprint--I ain't paying you to just tell me to call Asurion.

2. If I lose/smash my phone after I drop coverage, I'll still have a few options. I could buy a new Epic at $300. I could reactivate my Pre (and save $10/mo) until the price of the Epic comes down, and/or I've saved enough months' worth of 4G fees to make myself feel OK about buying a new Epic. I could buy a Moment for cheap. Don't laugh--it's a great little phone if you hack it.

I'm not really planning on ever using option #2 above because I've never lost or smashed a cellphone in my life. Guess there's a first time for everything.

So that's my plan for insurance, assuming I upgrade to the Epic.

+1

waste of money only newbs by phone insurance...

With the huge effort to reduce your bill with plans like EPRP it is a newb move to then add this false sense of security to your life.

Unless you are a careless person, product insurance is rarely if ever worth it from an odds standpoint and consumer advocacy groups will tell you the same. If people would add up the amount they spend on all these extended warranties and insurance they would quickly find out they are spending a lot of money for something they rarely ever get to use. Besides, you already have the standard manufacturers warranty that covers you in some instances. Salespeople usually do a good job of making people afraid not to get it though. I have never bought a product extended warranty or product insurance and have never regretted it.

I'll stop ranting now.

I had both repair and replacement on my Treo, but now that I have it to use as a back up and I can upgrade every year, I may skip the Sprint insurance. If you add the $100 deductible to $84 for a year, that's the cost of a new phone in a year.

I've always been very careful. so I'll take my chances.

I've never owned a smartphone. I've been debating insurance on my Epic. I'm very careful with my possessions so I know I wouldn't break the phone or lose it. Should I get the Sprint $7 insurance a month or just stick with the manufacturer warranty? Does Sprint handle phone problems within the first year?
