No Insurance.. If My phone has problems Sprint is good about handling those problems in the 1st year of Manufacturer Warranty. I went through 3 pre's within the 1st Year. Sprint replaced them no questions asked at no cost to me. After Year I may consider insurance..
You don't get to add insurance after 1 year. Insurance must be added within 30 days of activation.
Whether or not to carry insurance on your phone is a personal decision based on how careful you are with your phone and how well you'd be able to cope (financially) with losing it.
For my Pre, I carried insurance on it until the craigslist price came down to about $225. At that point, it seemed a little ridiculous to keep paying for insurance that had a $100 deductible. I think I had TEP for maybe 6 months.
Assuming I get the Epic (I'm still waffling), I'll probably start out with the Lost/Stolen/Destroyed policy at $4/mo (not the TEP for $7/mo) until the craigslist price of the Epic goes down to about $300 or so.
My reasoning:
1. The Extended Warranty part of the insurance only adds "wear and tear" coverage to the manufacturer's warranty. Sprint's policy on what constitutes "wear and tear" has gotten awfully strict recently. Basically, if the manufacturer don't cover it, Sprint will tell you to call Asurion and pay the $100 deductible. Thanks, but no thanks, Sprint--I ain't paying you to just tell me to call Asurion.
2. If I lose/smash my phone after I drop coverage, I'll still have a few options. I could buy a new Epic at $300. I could reactivate my Pre (and save $10/mo) until the price of the Epic comes down, and/or I've saved enough months' worth of 4G fees to make myself feel OK about buying a new Epic. I could buy a Moment for cheap. Don't laugh--it's a great little phone if you hack it.
I'm not really planning on ever using option #2 above because I've never lost or smashed a cellphone in my life. Guess there's a first time for everything.
So that's my plan for insurance, assuming I upgrade to the Epic.
