I'm way out of date on the subject matter. I still have my Sprint GS3, rooted, stock ROM, V 4.1.2, with tethering app installed (3.3-beta2-06102013). The latest I remember was when the next higher O.S. became available for the GS3 the KNOX feature made it so it couldn't be rooted (or something like that), and since at that point I had already done the root and installed the app I just left everything as it was.

And if I'm correct congress passed something that made it so that the carriers can't block you from using unlimited data on devices other than just the handset.

Thinking about maybe getting a new handset and I'm wondering what current state of affairs is both with the O.S. and with the unlimited plan from the carrier.

Thanks

Sprint will allow you to tether by adding it on to your plan. The rates vary depending on how much you want to buy and which plan you are on. Their $70 unlimited plan already includes up to 3GB of tethering. Although, Sprint unlimited now has the potential to throttle users that go over 23GB of data during any billing cycle.
